Paper Clip CEL Check On '99 3.0 Did Not Work

I got a CEL today and wanted to check what it was using the paper clip method. I found the 16-pin connector behind the ashtray and shorted pins 8 and 13, then turned the key to the ON position. The CEL blinked short once and then stayed on; no long or short flashes. I tried it twice but no luck. I am sure I shorted the correct pins because the first and last in each row are numbered on the connector (1 and 8, and 9 and 16) so it's easy to figure out where to stick the paper clip. I gave up in the end and just reset the CEL by pulling the 7.5 A fuse under the hood.

Can someone confirm that the paper clip method works on '99 3.0 CLs?

I had the same thing happen when i did this. Crap.

Finally took it to autozone.....but i feel like a user.

Isn't there another jumper location for this paper clip connector behind the passengers side dash or something and not just the OBD-II connector behind the ashtray?
