Painting Carbon Fiber

Anyone know of any special prep that has to be done before painting carbonfiber?

Well i dont care about how much it cost but when i get the hood i was thinking about painting the hood not the whoel hood just the side closest to the fenders until the angles lines in the hood, then leaving the middle regular c/f, we will be doing it at my dads shop so it doesnt cost me anything and i already have my paint. I was thinking maybe just the same old way you paint polyura. caues all thats over the c/f is a polyura gelcoat someone help me please

it should be the same as painting any other panel.

sand abit of the clear coat, but dont sand to deep and you should be fine.

My buddy and I painted his CF hood not too long ago. We used either 1000 or 2000 grit wet sanding paper (dont remember but i think it was 1000) to just scuff the gelcoat on the ENTIRE hood. Then primered (2 layers). Wet sanded that a bit to make it more smooooooth, painted just the sides to the body lines (3 layers of paint), wet sanded the lines from the tape to make everything nice and smooth once again and then cleared the ENTIRE hood to get that perfect, deep shine. This was done maybe 4 months ago when it was still warm and it still is shiny.

His brother got a CF hood too and the original gelcoat got flat after 2 months of it being on the car. That we just scuffed and clear coated it with 5 layers and it looks soooooo nice.

i think the hardest part of painting just the out sides will be the paint line where the paint ends and the carbon fiber starts. it will have a line, and may look like shit. i guess if you put a couple 5 coats of clear coat it should blend out ok. idk.. i just fix cars not paint them.. how much lighter in weight is the cf hood over the stock one?

See we ran into the same problem, but that is why we put 3 layers of paint on the sides and then when we pulled the tape, we did have that line, but this is why we wet sanded them down really gently to the point were there was a VERY VERY slight bump and the paint wasnt too thin. I'll get pics next time i see him of the finished product. He has a 02 Accord Coupe BTW. the other thing that you have to look at is that the lines are on body lines of the hood so they kinda disapear...

Im not too sure about weight, but i know that a stock hood you need two people to carry and install. The CF i installed on my own. I'd say that as a ballpark wight (im not sure of actual weights i say again) it would be like 10-20 Lbs while a stock would weigh like 70-80 if not more. Anyone know? i know that he doesnt have hood struts on it and it opens really easily. Pinky finger to be exact. Try taking you struts off and doing that with your stock!
