Paint Job Question
When the name Maaco is mentioned most of the feedback I here is that they do crappy prep work and therefore their paint jobs come out crappy.
I was wondering, if you prep your car yourself, and purchase your own quality paint (i.e. House of Kolors), and bring your car and the paint to a Maaco, or similar budget paint shop, do you think then, the paint job would come out good?

well... the prep work is the hard part so if you want to take the time to sand it down and all and then trust a thousand dollars of paint to a moron then go ahead....
you would have to instuct them to do a certain numnber of coats and coats of clear, which would runthe cost up more who knows call em up and ask

Dont do Maaco, just spend the extra money for a decent paintjob, they don't know what they're doing. I don't even think they wetsand before clearing. My girlfriend had her car painted there and its Orange Peeled to hell and theres paint on the gas tank and muffler...they suck. She also paid like 300 or 400 for the extra feautres not just the $89 special.

My thoughts exactly. Sanding it took so much time for me that I don't think I'd put myself through that again though. My main mistake was thinking that I didn't need a primer.

you need epoxy primer on spots where it's thru the paint or body work, after that just use a sealer primer. sealer primer doesn't have to be wetsanded as well as base coat ( as stated above) expoxy needs wetsanded and clear if you don't want the orange peel. any price under $3, 000 the paint job usually turns out bad, maaco's paint lasts about a year, and who's to say if you take paint to them to have it sprayed if they'll do it or any other shop for that matter. Most shops have a prefferred paint. And if you were looking into house of kolors, look into dupont hot hues. It's a new line they came out with basically the same as house of colors and dupont is easier to work with.
