ok to drive without the outer brake pad shim??

ok to drive without the outer brake pad shim??

I was applying some anti-squeel compound to the back of my brake pads... then i noticed that the outer shim between the calipur and brake pad on the driver side is missing..... is it ok to drive around like that??? could that contribute the the squeeling i have??

I think it's OK to drive without it from a safety/damage standpoint, but it could definitely be contributing to the noise...
