Usually i drive in D4 just because its an extra gear that can be used. As for the kick, it might either be a engine mount or your tranny is about to die... Thats the problem with our 3.0's. Anyway, get a tranny cooler. They are about $50 and gives the tranny extra life. Search for tranny coolers here and you will find where to buy and how to install. I have to rebuild my tranny and am getting to it soon.

I use D4 most of the time cuz I drive almost all highway, but D3 is okay in the city, just not as good of gas mileage

D3 is for higher torque and no overdrive. Everyday driving (I drive the highway everyday) I drive d4 everywhere. The manual says that D3 is for "towing" so when I have my 350 lb friend in teh car, then i throw it into d3

D3 is lots of fun, high rpm/torque upto about 160km's at 6500rpm then I goto D4 for 100+mph run to your stall limit just shy of 130mph.

Have to agree though, if running a stocker they are not the quickest around but put an additional 75hp into the mix with a little nitrous and all of a sudden it's not so bad.

That's not true. Although I wish it was. D3 just prevents the tranny from going into 4th. The 90-91 Accord had a "sport" mode that made the tranny shift at higher RPM, but it was an actual button. We don't have that. The early Maximas and G-20's had a sport mode as well. Would be cool to have so that driving an auto doesn't suck so bad.
