My Dr Evil transmission story (VERY long w/ cliffs)

Before you make any conclusion, read the whole thing or at least the cliff notes at the end. there is a twist.

so I got my dr evil transmission installed a few months ago, around february I think. I had it installed by a "chain" shop called lee myles transmission.

they got it installed within a fairly reasonable amount of time and I went by to pick it up. when I showed up they said there was a problem. *GREAT*

Apparently it wasn't shifting past second. Oh wonderful, I though. third gear is fucked already on a brand new transmission. Fortunately this wasn't the case,a dn it just turned out that one of the wires on one of the plugs had gotten pulled out and wasn't making a connection.

Cost to this point $4000 for trans + shipping, + $850 for install, flush and trans fluid. TOTAL: $4850

So I get my car and pull out of the lot, and at the first stop light I come to, the car downshifts from second to first gear. the WHOLE FUCKING CAR SHAKES. scared the shit out of me. I was kind of concerned, but I figured it wa sjust how it was supposed to shift since it was so hard and it was built like that.

I gave it time, and I became more and more convinced that the shuddering was something wrong since it didn't happen all the time.

I spent the next month and 1000 miles working with the shop that installed it to find the problem ($80). I alos called dr evil several times for consultation. Lee myles was convinced it was something internal with the transmission. Dr evil insisted it was probably comething else wrong with my car.

Since I didn't experience this before teh trans install Iw as pretty sure it was the trans. Just to be safe I went to a second shop and had them check it out and they also said it was an internal problem with the trans.

So I ended up shipping it back to dr evil to have them check it out since two seperate shops said it was the trans. I also had the shop that initially installed it, uninstall it and set it up on the pallet.

As soon as it was on a pallat I called dr evil adn they called the shipping company that said they would be out THAT DAY to pick it up.

5 days later I was wanting to make sure it was picked up. Well gues what? They never showed up. I had to call dr evil again and they calle dthe shiping company to bitch them out. The shipping company showed up 2 hours later to pick it up.

the next week it arrived at dr evil, and they call me to tell me that whoever strapped it down was a retard, and put the straps over teh solenoids and they broke during shipping. I look up the price of hte solenoids on several parts shops online, and cheapest I find is $400 for both!!!

I remember I still have my old trans with solenoids on it, and I end up shipping those out to dr evil express. ($40)

At this point 4 weeks have gone by. this was supposed to have taken 2-3 weeks max.

Dr evil then proceeds to spend 2 weeks taking it apart and testing it several times on their dyno. They call me and tell me that they can't find anything wrong with it. I wanted to kill myself.

They ship it back, and charge me another $250 for shipping, adn I figured since they were shippign it I might as well get more trans fluid from them.

It gets RE-installed, and not only does it still have the HARD-CRAY SHAKING-shifting, but it's also revving on it's own now.

FUC-KING GREAT!!!

Cost up to this point: $4850 + $325 RE-shipping and RE-fluid + $780 RE-removal and RE-installation and RE-flush + $40 shipping of solenoids + $80 other shit

Total cost: $6075

I am so pissed off at the revving thing that I wanted to take care of it ASAP. did a bunch of shit and it turned out that it was the IACV.

Ordered the part for $107 off hondaautomotiveparts or some shit.

Idle problem FIXED!!

Drive it around a bit... wait.. what's this? The transmission isn't doing the crazy shifting anymore? OMFG!!!!! :suicide:

to sum up, I spend over $1225 on something, that should have only cost $100. Dr evil was right the whole time about it being something else with my car.

I'm loving the transmission now that it doens't crazy shake. I jsut need more power now to make some real use of the trans.

cliff notes:
-paid $4850 for dr evil trans
-was having problems
-sent back trans
-went a month and a half without my car and paid $1100 for it
-got it back and still had problems
-replaced $100 part and fixed "transmission" problem

-wasted $1225

Around the same price. But this is a built tranny, with lsd, higher torque convertor, better clutch pack (better material that withstand more heat), the works. Worth it in my opinion.

Gotta pay to play.

lol, thats actually the first time i have been called a noob. i thought i had at least past that part....

so is a 4k tranny needed for the stock CL-S engine or can any rebuilt tranny work? because my friend said that since we now know what the problem is, rebuilt trannys use better materials for our clutch packs.

as stated before you gotta pay to play. the more you pay, the better it will work (most of the time.) Sometimes you are just paying more for the name for a negligable dirfference(Monster audio cables vs no-name cables), but most mechanical things (turbo/engine/transmission) have a reason for costing more.

It was $3500 for the trans, +250 shipped plus the $100 or $150 i paid cocoa for his old trans to use the case (thanks again man), plus like $20-40 for some bolts that were missing.

As for gettig the dr evil for teh second gen: CleanCL got one and it failed on him. according to the shop taht took it apart they said it looked like they just "threw it together and powdercoated the outside", but after my dealings with shops in this area, and this whole fucking experience posted here: I've learned that shops will say fucking ANYTHING to get your money, so take that with a grain of salt, a FUCKING BIG ONE!

On the other hand there are several accord V6's with 300+ whp who have been running the Dr evil trans fine for several years. So the 4 speed autos work for sure, but It's still undecided on the 5 speed auto's for the second gen. Just like this situation, up until I found out the problem ON MY OWN, I really had no clue who's fault it was, regardless of which shop said what.

i agree that you get for what you pay for and a tranny is nothing to skimp on. but since i dont have any performance mods and the only thing im considering in the future is headers then im wondering if dr.evil's tranny is right for me.
i can get a reman tranny for 2.5k, not sure how good it is. but like i said earlier it should not have honda's original problems.

My goal, if I go this route, would be to stroke it get cl-s pistons...depends on how

They're great, if I stay auto which i'm still on the ropes about, I would def have them do my tranny. This was a freak issue and he got it fixed, most stories I've heard were good news, but that was a few years ago

Faced with the decision of getting a new car ( used or new ) or getting a new tranny soon, I traded her in. Got an 05 G35. My other choices were an 06 TL, 09 mazda6 or an 09 mazda3. I Probably made the choice few people would make, nontheless, I jumped ship. I love the car. I went out looking at cars not expecting to find anything, but the deal was great and I loved the car. I was looking at cars for the last two months and the TL was leading ( mind you this was with the expectation of keeping my CL ), but I kinda fell in love with the G35. I imagine cost of ownership will be much higher, but I love driving it. I didn't expect to like the g35 more than the tl, weird.

i'm sad to let the CL go, but this has been over two months in the making; I thought about keeping it nonetheless and going with the dr. evil tranny after a few months of saving up...but alas, it would have been a waste of time/energy/money. I might part with a few mods, I didn't save everything, but I'll list them appropriately in da black market if I sell them on acurazine.

By the way, i went to four dealerships (infinity, acura, mazda, and vw..thought about a tdi for a few weeks ago ), and I was literally the only person in each dealership looking for a vehicle. As you can expect, they're giving insane deals. I actually laughed when mazda's sales rep told me 'what he'd do for me'. Never have I heard someone go from 6 grand on total trade-in and incentives to 11 in two minutes.

Non existent manual tranny that goes in without it being a pain in the ass or being cost effective.

how much did you get on the CL for a trade in?

ghost_masterCL; sorry to hear about the headaches but glad to hear its resolved. infact this thread has helped me out quite a bit. i thought my rebuilt tranny was acting up, i had it done in feb this year, have 26,000kms on it. it started shifting funny going into 3rd under normal accel. i took it back to the shop i got it done at, we went for a test drive. he told me to get the TPS adjusted and see if that fixes it. otherwise he'd have to bring it in.

so after reading this thread i talked to my mech and and we figure minus whale try it. it seems to be better, not perfect, so i'm gonna do the TPS next. it seems like the readings between the TPS & IAC aren't jiving to what the rpms are and that what's causing the problem.

i should find out what parts he put in cause the only OEM part was the filter screen thingy. it sure seems alot faster.
