how often should i change synthetic oil?

i'm sure this has been asked before and i think there are some varying answers. so let me just ask this one more time.

i'm using mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30.

i've heard 3k miles, 7,500 miles, and everything in between. so? which is it?

thanks

The oil itself should be fine to about 5000 miles at least. Changing it really depends on the oil filters' ability to remove particles for that amount of miles. I check the oil every week anyway, but when I get to around 3000 miles I check to make sure the oil isn't dirty, getting black, and it's consistency. I just change it when it looks like it need to be changed. On average it's around 5000 miles give or take 500-1000 miles.

There really is no clear cut answer, but saying its definintely 3000 miles just makes it easier to do.

i have been looking at some used oil analysis on bobistheoilguy.com forum, and it seems that if you change your oil out b4 5k, you wont benefit too much from sythetic because dino oil seem show the same wear pattern as sythetic oil under 5k. however, after 5k, dino oil start to break down and lose some of its additives.

anyone who owns a car should really check out bobistheoilguy.com forum.

yeah, but your not talking about synthetic right?

everyone says regular oil should be changed every 3k, and sytheic is supossed to last twice as long.

4-6K depending on how it looks.

You also have to remember, oil these says is so much better then it use to be that the 3K standard isn't as necessary. It's still around so oil companys still make money. I know car nuts who will go 7-8K+ between changes. But you can never change it to much.

I use the Fram X2 (the one in the metal can). I change my oil (Mobil 1) when the "indicator on the dash turns yellow.

Fram filters are junk as seen in 3 independent tests. Only trust STP, Bosch, Mobil 1. Canadian and US honda filters are bad too

i forgot about that. The only time that my little indicator changed from green to yellow, i changed the oil and it went right back to green. Is that what thats for?? Yeah i think i went around 4k on regular oil that time.

The indicator is for 7500 miles from the last time you reset it. That's Honda's recommendation assuming you use non-synthetic. 7500 miles.
