How do you guys feel about...

leather dying?....

me and my cousin are planning to dye the leather for our cars (he has a bmw 525i 93)...one of the reason i wanted to do this is cause my leather has quite a few cracks in it (previous owner didnt take care of it too well). the kit that i want to grab comes with the filler for the cracks and the dye of my choice for like 150...i realize that this would take forever but ive been doin some reading on this kit and its a kit that dealers use to restore leather....

i have that stock tanish leather and i wanted to change it to black as i want to redo my interior all black...i also have a source to get dyes for the dash, and all the plastic parts in the inside of my car including the roof and the carpet. imma do this in december cause its going to take FOREVER to finish up...but when its done im thinking its going to be nice as hell...ive seen pictures of an TL done this way and it looks sweet...

have any of you guys done it?...

Helped my boy do his, came out nice, but the dye gets everywhere, you're better off takin the seats out of the car, or plastic wrapping all your carpet. But if you take your time, it comes out real nice

Couple days if you take your time, you gotta count drying time in.

yeah i know...

so i have this misconception in my head that if i do the dying that itll get all sticky if it gets too hot and then get all over your clothes later. think of taking a sharpie and coloring something and then when you put you finger on it and give it some pressure itll get on your hands...that doesnt happen with this dye stuff does it? i havent found a spot that can give me a straight answer...but the product that im gonna grab says its the stuff that dealers use..

maybe i should just give you guys a link...ill do it when i get back from school

well essentially you can dye your car whatever color you want. i think on the website that im getting the stuff at its like 30 bucks extra for a factory color. yer gonna wanna get the full kit which is like 150 already so thats like 200 bucks shipped i think...it sounds like a fun project...

one of you guys said that our cars will never be able to go hella fast and that they are more for show..might as well make it look as good as possible right?

Would painting the dash/panels be any better than dying it?

yeah i suppose you can call it that...i like that better than like spraying it on or something..

and painting would not be better than dying..with painting, all youre doing is putting color on top of the surface you are trying to color, leaving it to cracks and pealing..with dye, the color is actually thinner (i believe) and is able to seep into the surface you want to color, thus cracking and pealing wont happen (depending on what dye you use)...and depending on what kind of dye you use, you wont have it fade or anything...its really cool and i really excited to try it out. if i fuck up i can just take it to the shop i know and they can redo my interior...

quote me though if im wrong about the explanation..buts thats just my understanding

you know you can dye your interior even if you dont have leather. actually i think itd be easier. i did some more research and actually called the folks im getting the product from and they said that it would take about 9 days to complete the whole process. that 9 days includes all the drying in between processes and what not. im doin it over winter break...

leathermagic.com
leatherique.com

those are the websites im getting the products at. its pretty pricey but compared to getting whole new seats its significantly cheaper.
