How big of a puddle do you have to hit to suck water into your engine?

Any one ever blown their engine? I have yet to, just installed CAI not too long ago. I heard a horror story last night from a friend about another guy. Not too sure if it was true though. Aparently he hit a puddle 4" deep? I tend to believe that it would have to be way deeper or possibly fully submerged. I know they
have a water bypass valve but I hear it minimizes the effects of a CAI. Being it is raining today and rains alot in PA, should I be worried? Any input would help, thanks guys

From what I've read before, the filter has the be fully submerged for hydrolock to occur.

you would have to floor it while your intake is submerged in water.

A friend of mine had this problem. His car was dropped 3 inches, hit a puddle about 4-5 inches deep and hydro-lock within seconds. no bypass valve so i guess he was asking for it. But it turned out to be ok because he got a new motor and put a turbo on it.

Actually, it doesn't take much water to hydrolock the engine.

However, physics dictates that since air is lighter than water, as long as air can enter the filter, the engine will suck air. Only when the air flow has been sealed off (submerging the entire filter under water), will then engine suck water.

Like others have mentioned . . . don't drive through any lakes and you'll be fine!

well, jesus, my car is stock, so teh intake would have to be at LEAST a foot off the ground. I haven't seen footdeep puddles... ever. I guess I have nothing to worry about. My CAI is in the mail.

Thanks alot CL crew. Definitly calmed my worries. As long as I stay out of lakes ( he he he) I'll be alright. I was avoiding every puddle like I was about to hydrolock on anything.

and even then, you'd have to floor it for a few seconds. And you'd have to be serioulys emerged cause if you were moving the bumper would be pushing away a good amount of water

SO lets say.. theoreticallyl if I were driving along and say... a damn broke nearby and I see a reiver of water coming towards me I should probably drive away as fast as possible, and if it cought up with me, just turn the car off?
