Help: dealer trying to rob me?

Hey guys I need some help

I want to to paragon Acura today to get my ignition switch replaced, I thought this was under the safety recall, so I go there and they look up my VIN, the service guy tells me that the recall was done in 2005 from that exact location (Paragon Acura) but my ignition switch is in such a bad condition that when I start the car, it starts, but I'm unable to turn it of, so if I pull the key out the car stays turned on...

I asked the guy; since the part was changed here, doesn't it have an warranty? he replies no, is it true?

then he says I'll have to pay them $125.00 to get the car diagnostic, I agreed to do so. If I get my car worked on at the dealer, do I have to pay the $125 diagnostic fee, shouldn't it be free since I'm going have them work on the "problem"

I strongly believe that the recall was never done... how can I be certain that it was worked on?

take it to a different dealer. Just tell them you want the ignition recall done. They sound like a bunch of idiots. At my Acura dealer its $40 for the car diagnosed, and thats credited towards the repair.

I'd seriously consider taking it to a different dealer and never mentioning you took it there and that Paragon said it was done already.

If you never really want to go back, you can always ask the service adviser for the keys to get something out of the trunk or something and drive off with it. (assuming its not in a garage or anything) You wouldn't catch me paying $125 for a diagnosis.

I wonder if there is a 800 number I can call make sure I'm not getting robbed, I'm like 90% sure they never replaced it, I wonder if I can find the new ignition switch part number, and see if matches the ignition switch on my car

there is an 800 number, but thats what the dealerships use to see if the warranty applies to you and if you've had it done already.
it may have been replaced already but it could be another faulty one.

See I would take the car to another dealer, but my car is already there, and with the switch problem, it's not easy to drive car around;

if they replaced it, why isn't it under warranty?

i'd complain that its probably a faulty one. because this is what the recall is for, and sounds kinda like whats wrong with your ignition.
1998 ACURA CL ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
Recall Date: 10/27/2003

Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MINI VANS, THE IGNITION SWITCH MAY WEAR EXCESSIVELY AND PREVENT PROPER INTERLOCK OPERATION, MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO THE ¿OFF¿ POSITION AND REMOVE THE KEY WITHOUT SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION TO "PARK."

Consequence:
IF THE VEHICLE OPERATOR DOES NOT SHIFT TO "PARK" BEFORE REMOVING THE KEY AND FAILS TO ENGAGE THE PARKING BRAKE, THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL PERFORM AN INSPECTION PROCEDURE THAT DETERMINES THE AMOUNT OF CYLINDER BODY WEAR. IF SIGNIFICANT WEAR IS INDICATED, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE CYLINDER BODY, COLLAR, AND LATCH PLATE. IF NO SIGNS OF WEAR ARE INDICATED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LATCH PLATE WITH A REDESIGNED PART. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 8, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.

What the hell are you talking about?

Dude if your radiator "blew" or whatever because it was left running you have other problems.

500 for a radiator?! Wow they're seriously trying to rob you. I bought a factory radiator and had mine done at a local shop, like $120 for the radiator and $40 for install!

$500 for radiator sounds right for dealership prices. i got that quote from my local dealership but they've done well over 4k in warranty on my car. but i cheaped out and got a radiator off ebay and installed it myself for $100.

even if you let the car run until the gas ran out, it wouldn't blow the radiator.

Whoa... Tell them that's their fault and they need to fix that shit... Thats whack!... I mean tell them that everything was working fine except the ignition thing and that they probably did something to it to f it up... I'm not really sure what authorities you could get involved but find out and get someone to help you out because that's ridiculous

^most of the time that doesnt work. i'd consider it lucky that they're even replacing the ignition again.
is the radiator blown or cracked?
if it was blown then good luck with a lawyer since it takes awhile for a radiator to blow, it doesnt happen over night.

$500 is absurd, I got my koyo replacement rad for like $50, $80 shipped and installed it myself.

the car has been seating for almost one yr in the exact place (backyard) I drove it for two days, then dropped it, I’m a DIY guy, but I don’t mess with electronic stuff (ignition switch) so I drop it off @ dealer

Now I'm wondering if the radiator went bad on its own, or did those fuckers do something?

Also, I don’t have car right now; and I wonder if they would give me a loaner?

Im very confused...

if i were in your shoes, i would buy a new radiator off ebay, put it in. let them change out the ignition system, and maybe politely ask if they'll give you a courtesy loaner.

I thought of that and even searched for one online… but the problem is I live like an hr away from the dealer, maybe more... how do I bring that car home with a bad radiator, tow it? that will cost me 150+ and then 140+/ radiator shipped/ time for shipping will be 5 days… that’s 5 days more without a car again… I work in CT so a car is a must…

I have a feeling if I said I wasn't going to have the radiator replaced they would have changed me to put in the new ignition switch, and diagnostic fee, that might be another $225

So… ya Im pretty much fucked here

i dont think they'll pull that on you, just tell them you dont want the radiator fixed and that they should fix the ignition under recall. recall covers all parts and labor including diagnostics.

First off, don't go in there spouting about lawsuits and getting fucked. If they like you they are going to be much more willing to help.

If they really did replace the ignition the first time and are doing it again for free, thats a nice gesture. They owe you nothing. If you had a cd player put in your car and three years later the cd player took a shit, would you expect another one free?

The radiator is not their fault. Simple solution. Have them to the ignition and find a local radiator shop to the dealer. Have the car towed across town for $50 and have them put in your rad. for you.

Its not that big of a deal.

The last thing you want to do is walk in and be threatening and a jerk, they will get defensive and send you on your way.

I have had customers do that to me, and I stuck it to them royally. Fair or not, thats how it works. If I like someone and they are pleasant, I will go out of my way to help. If they treat me like crap, Ill do the same to them.

I don't think you can compare an ignition recall to a CD player. It's a recall and safety issue. If the recall was really performed but with a defective part (ie: a part with the same exact issues), then yes, it is the dealership's/Acura's responsibility to replace the part with a good one.

True, I doubt that the dealer could have caused that damage.

Good luck with that in the future. I guess you've been lucky with naive customers that will just cave (or that knew they really were wrong), but I don't think you'll find a lot of people on here that won't noticed they're being screwed.

i gotta agree on this, because i deal with customer service alot, if they're nice polite they'll be treated that way. any threats for cops/suing and you'll shown the door.
everytime i go to the dealership, ive been polite and ive gotten them to replace things under emissions warranty/recall even if it wasnt really classified under either.

It really has nothing to do with "Screwing" anyone. There were occasions when I could have thrown in parts for free to help a guy out, but didn't because the treated me like shit.

Alot of people don't realize that if your nice to the people that you are working with they can make things happen to help.

IMO, the dealer is not responsible for a three year old part that was replaced under recall. Unless there was another recall on the recall.

Evan

Seriously though, I didn't post this to start a pissing match. I posted it to point out that walking in there with a crappy attitude and being a total dick is NOT the way to handle things.

OH, and a pefect example...

I had an S10 and broke the hazard switch off in the truck. It was about a year old. I went in to check part pricing. $500 installed. I spoke to the parts guy, and was very upfront. Told him I broke it, and it was NOT a defect.

They made me an appointment, I told him I could not afford the switch yet and he told me he spoke to his svc. manager and had it covered by the dealer for free.
