Gas octane (heh yes again)

Gas octane (heh yes again)
We'll this afternoon Im at a gas station (mobil to be exact) and I'm putting in my 87 like usual. I see another CL pull up next to me also a 97' pretty much stock except clear corners. I was watching him fill up and he put in 93 octane. My friend has a CL and he puts in 93 octane also. He says "It's better for the engine". I say "Your suppose to use 87"...
Now are they getting any benefit at all? Engine run better on 93? I've always used 87 He's like "I only used 87 once or twice when I had to"
Is there anyone who can scan the manual or somewhere where it talks about the octane. I dont have a manual and I want to show my friend.

The manual reads " Use an unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number of 86 or higher. Use of a lower octane gasoline can cause persistent, heavy matallic rapping noise in the engine that can lead to mechanical damage." There basically isn't much benefit from using the 93 instead of 87. In fact, it could actually result in poorer performance, emissions, fuel economy and is just a waste of money from using a higher than recommended octane fuel.

the manual does say 86 or higher. but i use higher octane because when i first bought the car, the dealer put 87 in and it was really loud, i tried using a higher octane and after getting rid of the old gas, it sounded much better. not sure about the performance though.

Using anything above is a waste. My friend a tech at honda advised me to run only 87. When I 1st bought the car, I was running 92, and the gas mileage wasn't great, and the car lagged from time to time. After switching to 87 gas mileage went up, and the car felt less sluggish.

no.
octane is a rating of how hard it is to ignite, higher octane prevents detonation, save your money and use the cheap stuff

it all depends on your compression ratio. my f22 ran great on 87 but now i gotta use 93 in the h because of the high compression. which sucks, cause that shit is expensive as hell!

Waste of meny, especially these days. Stick to the 87, unless you have changed to a multi-fire ignition module. Then, only on the race course, you might get a benifit from 97. Best to stick to the 87.

Hobo is right.
Octane is the measure of how much pressure it takes for the fuel to ingnite on it's own. With high compression engines like the CL Type-S, if you use a lower octane fuel, the fuel will literally start to ignite itself before the spark plug even fires (= detonation). The engine (well, computer) will then alter anything it as to compensate (and keep the motor from self destructing), which of course will result in less power. Using high octance in an engine that doesn't need it (like ours) will cause the computer to pull timing so that it will ignite properly - which also will result in a loss of power.
This assumes an engine is good working order. With crappy plugs, whack valves, etc - who knows what it needs to be happy. If your engine is in good working order tho, you should have no reason to use anything other than 87.
High octane engines don't have any extra detergents, cleaners, etc. Gas companies want you to buy it because they make more money. It's about $2-3 difference in price per fill up. Think if they have 100 customers a day, at 10,000 locations, with $2 difference - they made $2M extra that day. Times 365 days is $730 MILLION DOLLARS by having everyone buy the $0.20 more gas. You can see how it would be benificial to them for you to "waste" a couple dollars. There are quite a few more than 10,000 gas stations too, feel free to add a few zeros to that $730M: $7.3 BILLION, $73 BILLION. Oil companies are rich fuckers...

I usually use 87, but I'll toss in some 93 from shell, their V-power shit, to keep the injectors clean, but that's about all I do it for, like once every 4 or 5 fill ups will I do that, all the rest is 87.

If you want to clean the injectors better, switch to Chevron.

I have been using 87 on my CL as well and I can't think of any reason to go higher.
Just out of curitosity, what kind of fuel milage are most getting on their CL's?

400km per tank is pretty damn good for a 3.0, unless they have bigger gas tanks than the 2.2. I'm getting around 500km per tank and mine is a 2.2 with a V2 intake that has seemed to help the milage. I use 87 octane by the way.

I dunno about you guys, but I get a lot better mileage out of a tank of 93. Also, all the myths I hear is it'll burn cleaner, and is better for your engine, never heard much to back it up though. I like arm and a leg 93 though

dude......did you not read anything we have been talking about? our cars run best on 87. period. dont waste your money on expensive gas. its not there to make your car run better, its there for the cars that require it, i.e. cars with high compression. save your money and stick with the 87. anyone who says they are getting better results out of anything else are just fucking retarded. Its been dyno proven that 87 runs best on the f22 and the j30.

the compression is so LOW in the f22 and f23 cl that it cant burn the extra octane anyways. you get no benefit. my cl ran better and got 32 mpg on the high way easy even having 80k on it and being 8 yrs old. just throw som cleaner in th tank like evry other oil change and use 87. dont wast your money
