figured out the gas mileage for my car....
it's a 99 2.3 cl auto with 64k on it and it's doing around 240 miles from a full tank.. mix of both hwy and local......mostly local. I used 91 unleaded and hardly step on it..just normal driving. Is this typical for this car?

87 works fine, to figure gas mileage, fill the tank, drive with trip odometer started at 0, fill up again and divide miles driven by gallons used...

Obviously all stop and go, or all highway driving will impact your mileage pretty significantly up or down. Overall though, you'll start to get a pretty good idea of what's normal for your car.

Fill up again, let the pump click off by itself. Divide the miles on the trip-meter by the gallons you just put in. That's getting you in the ballpark of the actual MPG you're getting. You can keep doing this with every fill-up and you'll see what your real average is.

It's funny, I was just talking to a mechanic friend of mine today who says using premium when you don't have to can actually cause some issues. (Damn I forget which particular things he mentioned).
Anyways, there are lots of articles out there from knowledgeable people who say that running a higher octane than required does no good (except help someone else make money).
If your car is running smoothly, feels good, then unless you're slamming on the gas at every stop light, then your mileage is going to turn out better than you think it is.

i know this is dumb, but when i drive on the highway (ie. drive to san francisco) i use 89 octane, but normally i use 87. Ive gone up to san fran couple times, and when i used 89 ive gone about 50 miles furthar b4 filling up. I go 425 miles with about a gallon left. But city driving i get 300.
Also when its cold outside 87 works best for my car. I sure its all in my head... But i swear its true!

I may be confused, but you're getting 300 miles out of 1/3 tank?

My 97 CL3.0 didn't come with a manual. The bastard lost it, and I didn't find it where I found his misplaced cheetos when I bought the car...
What octane should I be using for a CL3.0? I use 89 currently because it's a v6, has moderate compression and I push it a bit.
I read a while ago that the difference in octane is simply the resistence to combust under pressure. There is no `quality` difference, it is simply combustion resistence. Makes sense, this is why you use higher octane in larger engines. More compression, more fuel in general, more power. If this is true then it makes sense to use 89 in a fast v6.
But I'd like to know what my owners manual says :P
