Check Engine light is on...

i've got an 97 3.0 premium, and my 'check engine' light lite up a few days ago and i'm need help figuring out what is exactly wrong. this may not matter but... i first noticed that the (little) maintenance light had been red for a long time, before the 'check engine' light even came on. i got my oil changed and tires checked (you know the regular service) like a month ago at the acura dealership. the maintenance light was even on before my this service and stayed on after. anyhow, i called the dealership to ask how to reset the maintenance light and asked why the 'check engine' light was on. with their instruction, i reset the maintenance light. however, the girl i spoke with told me the 'check engine' light is on because i probably didn't tighten the gas cap and the only way i could get this light to go off was to fill up the tank (AGAIN ) and tighten the gas cap (by allowing it to click at least 7 times). i did this on thursday and the light still haven't gone off. please HELP. why is this light on? my car is practically new. the engine still looks very very very new and the car runs very excellently. the car has exactly 39,082 miles.

Take you rcar to any good auto part store and tehy will "Scan" it for you. The scan connector is behind the ashtray. If you want to buy a scanner for the future, the INNOVA 3100 is a very good, reliable, user friendly scanner for about $100.00. It will save you a lot of hassles in the future. Also, if the scan shows "Low EGR flow", code P0401, take yoru car to an Acura dealer and have them install their "Pipe Kit" - it's part of a service campaign and is 100% free. Teh INNOVA 3100 also comes with a very comprehensive code manual for all the problems the scans might show.

does it run good. if so i would make sure u got the code to the radio and disconect the battery for 15 min. this should clear the code. and it will save you over $100. however if it is a serious code then it will comeback immediatley. if it doesent then it could have been your gas cap, and its probibally fixed.

My check engine light had come on after I didn't tighten the gas cap the requisite 3 clicks. It actually took a couple of new tanks of gas before it reset itself.

As long as you've taken it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong, just wait it out a little bit longer.

thanks you all for the advice. i spoke to someone (with some sense) at the dealership couple of days ago and he told me to wait and see what happens. and just like you said Cr.ash79, he said it normally takes a while for the 'check engine' light reset; maybe couple filled ups.
