Changing oil today...

just thought i'd see what u guys recommend.

its time for my first oil change in the CL.

My plan is to get a ToyoRoki oil filter from acura. Is this what you guys are doing? is there is a better then the OEM filter i can use?

I know us legend guys recommend using the ToyoRoki NSX filter b/c its taller then ours and fits perfectly (both being C-series motors)

I am going to be putting in Synthetic oil. its what the car has been getting. I'm gonna see if the Acura Dealer has anything for a good price, else its gonna be either royal purple or mobile1 (probably purple)

I'm also planning on changing the trans fluid if i get to it. I have some GM synchromesh fluid already (i was gonna put it into the legend but i'll use it for the CL now)

anyways recommendations??

I use Mobile 1 synth and OEM filters. I'm not really familiar with the GM tranny fluid, I've only ever used OEM honda ATF, but I hear the GM is good stuff

yup its been synthetic oil since atleast 40k. also last couple years its had only MB synthetic fluid.

anyways i've successfully changed the oil, LOL. took me like 5min to find the oil filter. i didn't feel like crawling all the way back there atfirst and looked around but yea, the floor got wet quickly from the melting snow/ice. but its done, and running beautifully.

i also learned, during my pre-trip inspection (of the Legend) that my front right upper SPC ball joint has moved from its -.5 mark to all the way positive camber. driverside was normal. i guess that upper nut isn't torqued to spec. I guess i'm really not driving the legend at all now (atleast until its taken care of)

I'm not a believer in the high priced oil filters.. the Canadian Tire guy said "synthetic oil has been around a lot longer than synthetic filters", think about when Amsoil came out, people were using just the low price filters for years and years before all the specialty products came out. I have used the K&N and it's supposed to get finer particles out, but for 2.5 X the price.

My main problem with synthetic oil is in an older car (191,000 km), it cleans out the gunk that sits on your seals and helps keep the oil in, preventing/delaying what could be some expensive repairs.. my main started leaking with Mobil 1 (where the engine meets the tranny), not too bad, a few drips just sat on the bottom of the engine. Changed to high mileage Valvoline and STP oil treatment and it seems to have gone away.

My car also burns a fair bit of oil for which I've tried many things to try and control it, not knowing conclusively if it's the valve stem seals or not. You didn't list how many miles on the car but if you can use 10W30 instead of 5, do it.

With synthetic you will get slightly better highway gas mileage and quieter lifters upon startup. The temperature/viscosity profile is flatter with synthetic. Cold weather (-20 deg C) starts don't make my engine groan quite so much with synthetic.

-OEM Toyo filter/Mobil 1 filter
-5-20 Royal Purple oil (IMO much better then Mobil 1, my used RP oil felt way better then my new Mobil 1 last time I used it, quite sad actually)
-new drain plug gasket
(You can also do what Mercedes does with their AMG cars, and replace the drain plug itself ever oil change)

one says honeywell the other will say toyo roki. the honeywell is made in canada, the toyo in japan.

they are all blue btwn and look very similar. you'll notice any toyo roki filter is a little larger then honeywell filters.

there are also honda filter's that are made in usa.
