black brake lights on 97 CL

hey everyone, i just bought black spray tint, and im going to color the brake lights black. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on the best way to go about doing this...someone told me i should scrub the lights first and scrath them so the paint catches on the lens. Good idea? just wanna make sure i dont screw it up. thanks

I dont think that is a good idea. I know a lot of cops in my area would defintly pull a car like that over. Plus if you dont like it or ever get sick of the look you will have scratches on your lens and you would have to buy new lens, unless you dont mind looking at scratched lens.

Yeah i would not scratch them up at all. Then again i wouldnt risk being pulled over or being rear ended and being blamed cause my tail lights are tinted dark. The driver that hit you can claim he couldnt see your lights and you're screwed. Sorry just my opinion but i have heard the best way to paint them is to paint the insides that way they wont scratch. Good luck

Brake lights are installed and required for a purpose. They are intended and needed to be seen. The same lenses also sometimes double for the rear red lights that come on with the headlights. Why would you want to risk getting rear ended by reducing the light output and making them harder to see? Studies have clearly proven that the more noticeable the rear lighting system is the less likely a rear end accident will occur. That is why the third high mounted brake light became mandantory a bunch of years ago. In heavy summer rain storms, as an example, it is sometimes very difficult to see the vehicle ahead so it is certainly not just an issue of clear weather visibility. Its hard to respect putting aesthetics before safety, especially in this case.

One more issue. In almost all rear end accidents the driver at fault is the driver that does the rear ending. If you intentionally dim your brake lights, you are very likely to become libel for the damages caused by the accident. You go from being an innocent victim to becoming a lawyers wet dream.

I thought about the whole problem of dimmed brake lights, but I've seen another CL with black lights and it is still very bright, and also, I have a spoiler on it which also has the long set of LEDs that light up. Although after posting here, i will seriously have to reconsider to do it or not.

The spoiler with the row of LEDs is an excellent third high mount brake light only. It does not make you more visible to drivers behind you unless your brakes are applied. In other words, in heavy rain, fog, etc., it is no help at all.

I think altezzas would look ugly on our cars. Also, I wouldnt spray the outsides if you want to tint. They make your tailights rough to the touch and the paint may start to peel off after several months (blacked out the lights on my old car and had this problem)

You spray the inside dont you? Anyways, I would also agree that you shouldn't do it...especially since you live in irvine. The cops over there are asses when it comes to anything done to your car...that is if you are driving at night or something. A bunch of my friends that go to uci got pulled over for everything from exhausts to tints.

I also don't think altezza's would look nice on our cars. I say leave that to the civics and is300's.

I tinted my lights. They look very good. They wash off slowly after many car washes. You can see them just as well at night and day.

Its worth it. Little investment for big change.
