3.0CL auto shift, read your manual
this is a continuation on a old (and long) thread, but I just don't think it was ever finished.
first off D3 in town, D4 when crusing over 50-55, or on the freeway
gate shifting is fun and it might feel faster, but it's very hard on the tranny, even more so because the only time we do it is under full throttle. The main benafit is direct engagement of each gear and a little controle over the shift points, (our cars shift so slow)
98 CL Owners Manual max speed shit points
2.3
1st -->35mph
2nd-->65mph
3rd-->101mph
3.0
1st--->40mph
2nd-->75mph
3rd--->113mph
!!!don't downshift above these speeds or you will redline!!!
^^^^WRONG, (sorry wilp99)
our cars have a "lock-up" torque converter (helps fule economy by reducing slippage) when the converter locks up it may feel like anouther shift. Crusing at lower speeds 80-85mph in D4 if you step on the gas about 1/2 way (not enough to downshift into 3rd) you can feel it unlock and let you up your revs. a little bit, let of and you will fell a little kick when it locks up back up.
sorry I know this is running long but there is one more thing I want to cover and I havent seen anything about it yet.
Second (2) gear is pretty trick
when you put the shifter in (2) it locks the tranny in second gear. This means it will not downshift to first gear no matter how far you press the gas, or when you stop you start moving in second gear. Good for preventing wheel spin on snow/ice or steep hill climbing/decending. this also means you dont need to put your car into (1) every time you stop to get a good solid 1-2 shift, just leave it in D3 and when you have about redlined first gear move the shifter from D3 to (2) and the tranny will lock into second with no need to lift on the gas, Smoother than it sounds, and a whole lot more fun
love the site guys.

I just got my CL about three months ago and as far as getting into 13s I was kinda hoping you guys could help, I want a turbo and can't figure out why no kits avalible with all the v6 accords and preluds out there too. It seems quite a few of you are running SC wich I looked into but a turbo has so much oppertunaty for more power. I miss having a cluch SO bad and am looking at accords for a 5spd swap, anyone have any experence or advice?

I personally switch between D3 and D4 quite a bit around town. Around here there are a lot of 45 mph zones, adn I usually go 5-10 over so that makes it the perfect speed for D4, btu when a stoplight comes up and I ahve to stop I pop it back into d3 at around 40 mph...and give a it a tiny bit of gas too so it doesn't do the JERK when it downshifts. If you give it the right amount of throttle when you "manually downshift" you won't get any sudden jerk at all. I used to be able to do it perfectly, but after my header install I'll have to re-learn the correct amount of throttle to use.

Just be carefull about the way you manualy shift your auto transmission. These CL transmissions seem to be a bit fragile. Or maybe I just inherrited some one's (previous owner's) bad maintanance or driving habits. I replaced my transmission a month after buying the car. Horrible slippage between 3rd and 4th, then it got to where it wouldn't even go into 4th. then well, you know, transmission shop bound. About the only time I downshift D4 to D3 is if I have to decelorate suddenly or if I'm ripping on twisty mountain roads. Pike's Peak, CO uses D2 almost the whole way down (very little brake) to keep the park ranger's brake temp probe happy at the half-way stop (greater than 320 degrees F, and they'll make you stop for 30 minutes). I figure, let the tranny take the heat, and it seems to do fine. Hense, launching isn't recomended if you want to keep your CL out of the transmission shop. Anyway, enjoy your rides..

i have 110K on my tranny and I have beat it to hell and back. I got it with 66K 2 years ago. I manual shift the tranny about 40% of the time. I have found that if you want to start off good, to start in D1, let it rev to 6.5K and then shift to D2, if you left it shift itself it seems to shift right around 6.5K but doing it my way the tach goes right to 7K. I've tried this numerous times to see which way of shifting is faster and manually shifting from D1 to D2 at 6.5K gets me out a little quicker, about the length of my bumper. Not much, but if youre looking for all that, you know.
