2nd Tranny Club, Rebuild = OUCH

Just got a call from the tranny shop, they ripped apart my tranny and found problems galore. My rear bearings had apparently broken off, and flowed inside the tranny gears, tearing stuff apart, typical honda failure. I need new clutch plates, a new torque converter, new gearing, a bunch of random other parts, all in all the rebuild is going to be about $2700-2800 But at least my 3.0 will shift smooth again, but damn.... damn..... who's welcoming me into the 2nd tranny club?

Welcome. By the by, why are you paying soooo much for a rebuild? I got a remanufactured transmission installed for under $2,000. Just curious.

They quoted me 2 g'z for the rebuild, then found that the torque converter and a bunch of bearings were bad, the tc is 4-500 and the other stuff tacked on a few 100 more.

I've had no problems with my second. Though I think the lack of maintenance by the first owner is what killed the first one. That and maybe some launching. Gotta stay on that maintenance schedule.

I can't understand why somebody would replace a crappy automatic tranny with the same crap. Upgrade to Dr. Evil or do an H22A swap or a J32 swap.

Heck there was a J30 from the new accords (240 HP) with a tranny with a buy it now price of 890 several weeks back. Getting that, tracking down a ECU and having it installed probably wouldn't have been that much more then what you're paying now and you would've gotten a 5 speed automatic (instead of 4 speed) and 40 extra horsepower.

Hey, if you guys want to buy me a $4,000 dr evil tranny plus install labor, go right ahead. I am getting raped just doing a rebuild. You act like 4 grand and 2800 is such a small difference, but for most of us, it's a lot of money. Plus I get a warranty, sure I wish i could shell out the money for a dr evil, yes I know they exist, yes i could swap in a new motor??? But how is that such an easy solution when you're talking about getting just a rebuilt tranny? I'm already going broke over just getting the tranny rebuilt. I don't have an extra grand to shell out for a motor, or I would have done that.

I would have, had my tranny not been ready to break. It's already being rebuilt and will be done tommorow. I would have loved to put a DE tranny in there, but sadly, it was not to be. I can hardly afford the rebuild, let alone another 1-2 grand on top for a dr evil. I'm just glad that my car will shift good again, then I can stop worrying about it, and continue with all the mods taht are all over my living room, and filling up my closets.

Why put more money into the car? Rebuild the tranny, and sell it. And sell the parts you bought to put on...

Just seems like a big waste to me...

RIIIIIIIIGHT, let's start selling our CL's, ok, you go first. No seriously man, I love my car, I expected to get a new tranny on it, it's not a shock. I have A LOT of plans and investments into it, and this will not deter me from keeping my car. If you wanna sell yours, go ahead. I'm keeping my car for the near future.

I have been dropping subtle hints for months You should see my living room / closet, it's enough to make you cry. BUT, just got my car back this morning, and the smackura is shiftin nice as hell. Total was $2700 for full rebuild. With a 12 month / 12,000 mile nationwide warranty included. Got to let it break in for a couple weeks, but there will be mass modding and ripping apart in my future.
