1st gen sound system: Clarity, not Booty Bass. What should I look for?

I want to replace the stock system in my car. I've already got the HU, and I need to get some new speakers in here pronto! (probably by christmas time )

What speakers should I look at? An old post said we had...

2 tweeters in-dash
2 6.5 for the front
and 2 6x9 for the rears

Did I read this correctly? If so, what speakers are out there right now that would give me good, clear sound? Will I also need an amp? (Probably, but not sure.) When it comes to speakers and sound, im a total

Also, how much am I looking at spending? How about this:

Give me your dream setups as far as speakers are concerned, then give me a pratical setup that will still sound good. I'll find the middle ground from there.

Thanks guys!
-Alex

Yes, the speaker sizes are correct. Booty bass I love that term..

I just bought a sweet set of Audiobahn matched components and 6x9's

If you're trying to hand out the dough, i'd go with infinity kappa's or eclipse.

Those look ok, the reference are the cheaper kappa's, but note those are coaxial wired speakers. As for the tweeters, I got audiobahn 6.5 components with matched tweeters.

those are coax speakers- they already have a tweeter built on them. You should really look for component speakers- they have a speperate tweeter and mid driver with a crossover that sepperates the sound for you. If I were you I would go with a good quality pair of components up front, no rears, and a 10 or 12 in the trunk in a sealed box that will round out the sound. You deffinately should go with an amp to power it all- you could go with a 4 channel amp- use 2 channels for the fronts- and bridge the rears for the sub. Dont really know how much you want to spend, so it's hard to really reccomend something to you. But- the infinity kappa series is decent for subs and spekers- Alpine and JL 4 channel amps offer good clarity for the price too.

i have alpine type-r 6x9's and they fit fine. the fronts were another story. I didnt do my research and bought the 6.5 components which are wayy too deep for the shallow stock front speaker mounts. so i had to custom fab some spacers.

to all that. Stick with comps, you dont really need 6x9's if youre getting a sub since you prolly wont be able to hear them much anyways. but theyre nice to have if you have the money

some brands to try out:

mb quartz
focal
jl audio
alpine
boston acoustics
pioneer

the more expensiveish ones are up top. id say goto your local speaker shop and listen to them your self to see what you like

i dont like 6x9s, take yours out, get one 10'' sub, and then get some coaxial

round speakers custom-mounted in the rear-quarter panels, they sound great there.

my system is fully JL Audio, XR components up front w/ mmats coax in the quarter panels

w/ nothing at all in the rear deck

Infinities sound great. I would leave the stock tweeters and do a component 6.5's. Just remember the tweeter for the components have to be 12" or less away from the woofer for optimum sound. The rears are 6x9's. You can either get some 6x9's or custom mount some 6.5's in there. If you are gonna have a sub, you wont need any base coming out of your interior speakers. As far as speakers go,

Boston
Alpine
MB Quartz
Infiniti
Focal.

What i did was price out what i wanted to get on Crutchfield then i got the part numbers,
then looked up each part number individually on EBAY....They are sooo much cheaper on EBAY... Base is not as important to me now as it was when i was younger. now i just want clarity with that added depth. So now im looking more towards 2 8's or a 10.

As far as amps, i would recommend a 4 channel amp for your interior speakers. maybe 2 depending on how many speakers you are gonna have. But if you just leave the stock locations, then 1 4 channel amp will be fine. For the sub get a mono amp or a 2 channel that you can bridge.

If your gonna have a lot of power going into your trunk it is a good idea to get a cap to store some of that power. That will it will put less strain on your battery and altenator. Another way to go is to run 2 batteries. one for your car and one for your system.

same setup as me, the 6x9's have to be able to clear those metal bars that go across the trunk, thats the only fitment issue in the back. my fronts stuck out like 3/16" so i cut the back part of the plastic thing out and then they fit in perfectly, the alpines sound real nice too.
oh yeah, you'll prob. have to mount crossovers where the stock bose amp is, if you have a bose system, thats where i put mine, and you'll have to run new wiring to the tweeters too.

I say you just get 6.5's, tweeters and a good amp/sub combo...I have always been a fan of JL Audio- Clean, Crisp bass.

My old setup was Alpine (Deck, 6.5's, and Amp) up front and JL in the trunk... Had it in my ES 300.

Brands to stick with:
JL
Alpine
Rockford
Kicker
Cerwin Vegas
Boston Acoustics (They Aiiiight)
Infinity (if ur getting 6x9's)

ive got alpine type s 6.5s components in front. If you dont want to worry about custom mounting and crap just get the type s's. For the money get the fronts and back 6x9's and an amp. you will be happy with that.

With the components that is how i mounted mine,(very easy, and cheap to replace part just incase you f*%# something up).

Get comp. set up front, have them installed in kick panels. custom fab. them or get the q-forms (94-97 accord) and reinforce it with some fiberglass or mat. THe imaging will be alot better then in the stock location. Really no need for 6x9 in the back... you'll of course have to change out hu and install amps to power the speakers. And add a sub of course.

I have dynaudio in the front, powered by helix amps. Subs I have two 10s w6v2 powered by an Audison amp. HU have an RF one that's just a relabled Denon one. along with two Zapco 30band eqs... Love the sound, but then again, audio is an addiction. ALways room for improvment.

alex if u have the money get diamond audio silk dome component set. they are a little on the pricey side but u wont be disappointed. every person that have boughten them love em. thats what i want to get for my car or some mb quarts. as for the subs depends how much u willing to spend. i am planning on getting some diamond audio d3's and possibly orion amps.

these are the brands u should consider:
diamond audio
focal
mb quart
eclipse
zapco amps
