180 amp alternator wiring?
the 180 amp alternator that i got says that you have to upgrade the wiring from the batery to alternator or stater to 4 guage wire....is this correct...if so do i run the wire directly from the battery to the alternator or what?
thanks

um... if you are going to draw near the 180 amp rating id choose larger wiring... i opted for two 4 gauge wires directly from the alternator to the pos batt post.

If you have a stock car, then stock wiring is fine. The only thing you need to upgrade would be what draws the higher current. The stock fuse panel can't, b/c it's fused at 100amps - and the wire that goes to it from the alternator is fine for that. Only thing that can draw the extra power is an aftermarket stereo. However, unless you have a huge stereo that pulls more than 100amps, you shouldn't need to upgrade the wiring to the batt (4ga I believe). If you have a stereo that needs more than 100amps, you prob need a bigger alternator than 180.

hey... i neglected to put a cap on my car at first and apparently the current draw was enough to completely fry the first 8 inches of the wire going from the alt to the fuse block.
