17s or 18s; That is the Question!

OK, Guys!

I just came across some unexpected funds! [Yeah, me]!

I'm going to buy my wheels and tires soon.

I read a million posts about what kinds of wheels designs look great, and a few threads on which tires are best. Thanks!

My question is this: 17s or 18s?

My requirements: I know which designs I like, so either size looks ok to me. I guess the bigger question comes down to performance. Will an 18" reduce the performance of our CLs enough to warrant 17s?

BTW, these are what I'm getting: ADR Valkyrie

You will notice a difference with the 18's vs. the 17 in that wheel. I noticed a difference when I moved up. I still like the look of the 18's a lot better. Either way, it will make you car look nice.

I like the looks of 18's better, but I have been told you have to watch potholes and curbs closer. A few shots of Jagr and more... I have been known to park my car a little harder than usually. Those low profile tires don't give at all. So 17's are safer in my opinion, but 18's look better. O yea, 18's tires cost more and last less.

Performance wise 17's are the way to go even though 18's look better. Just decide whats more important to you, performance or looks.
I have 17's on my car and sometimes I wish I had 16's or 15's just to lower my 1/4 mile time.

It sounds like 18's are all about how they look. 17's you have a little more speed, comfort, cheaper rim, cheaper tire, not as much pot-hole worries. With all the money from your Rolexes get both.....one set for the track.....one set for the shows

In the new Import Tuner they say the bigger the wheel is the better the car will handle. It will also be heavier and hold you back a little. 18's definately look better, but 17's ride better. I would go on how much you drive.

I dont know how much you are paying for those, but groupbuycenter.com has the 17'racing hart m5's (identical to ADR) for $999 for the package deal. Just a thought, good luck

I personally like the looks of 17" better (in general). Plus 18" cost more, last less, ride rougher, slow you down more.. hmm.. need any more reasons to make up your mind? :P

the pics are floating around somewhere....... you did see his car at the meet...

with your drop you would have to get 18's........ or face the dreaded "wheel gap" :sqnteek:

Or you could go with a little bit bigger profile tire like a 45 or even possibly a 50 sidewall. You will get a better ride, but may not look as good. I went with a 45 on mine and it looks good.

Well, it looks like I went against the better judgement of most of you!

I settled for these: Wheels and Tires. Including shipping and tuner lugs, everything came to to just under $1200.00.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback!

EDIT: Part of my reasoning behind gettind this style of wheel was to keep it somewhat similar to the stock design ('97). I got the 18s more for the Show piece than anything. I'll put the OEM wheels back on when I run at the track (with Nitrous).
