How To: MDX 2006 XM Bluetooth USASPEC BT45-HON3

I wanted to provide a quick how to for the installation of a streaming bluetooth / phone unit to my MDX 2006 with Navi and XM. I purchased the BT45-HON3 https://www.usaspec.com/p-315-bt45-hon3.aspx and did the full install. I thought it would go fast but I was mistaken. Took about 4 hours as I had to learn how to remove and install the left rear panel. Shortcuts waste a lot of time. Here are the key things to know:

1. Remove the left real interior panel so you can gain full access to the XM unit bolted high on the frame.
2. Don't try to save time. Wear gloves. Remove the following equipment to get the panel off:
a) Rear left third seat (you will need the room)
b) Real left seat (you will need the room)
c) Upper D-Pillar where the seat belt for the third seat is mounted
d) Lower rear left door jam
e) all bolts holding the panel (see the related attachment with trim removal information)
f) all the jack equipment
g) The rear compartment lid: it just lifts off.
h) The real lid jam -- it's held only with clips.

The installation is easy once you have the panel off. See pictures for what it looks like unbolted from the frame.

I added the external microphone that came with it by carefully stuffing the wire in the upper door jam. It's clean.

I wish I had seen this last week!

Oh MAN!! I was looking for a post like this last week when I did this install. It took me forever because I couldn't find info. I posted my write up in another forum, but yours is better. I did finish the install. I did run an AUX cable and a USB cable from the unit, under the rear panel to the back seats so my kids could use them. I did not install the microphone because it isn't necessary with the Handsfree link. I did not remove the XM unit, if you pull the packing out from the Jack compartment, you can easily reach your hand behind the panel and access the XM unit.

I did find an old thread from another forum which explained in detail with pictures, how to remove the left rear panel, and it helped me much- but I cannot post that yet, because I'm a new member.

It does work great. No problems.

I attached Velcro to the BT45 and stuck it behind the panel.

Thanks!

I wonder if I can skip the microphone install since I'm planning on using the HandsFreeLink....

Or, would that be counter intuitive and fight each other in BlueTooth mode? As in one or the other

I would definitely put the microphone in. The Acura Built-in bluetooth does not seem to work with some newer phones. You will eventually run into issues. I was able to run the microphone from the driver's visor all the way to the back by tucking in the wire up along the headliner and then down the rear panel. The quality appears fine. You should not have issues with two Bluetooth devices but I can't say because I could not get my phone to pair with the native Acura hands-fee.

I disagree.

I did not put in the microphone, I don't think it's necessary. My handsfree link works just fine with my iPhone 6S plus.

Now, I did have the Bluetooth module replaced at the dealership a few years ago because it stopped working altogether. I would assume it's still the same one.

Anyway, you can use the new BTA module and the native handsfree link. For that reason, I didn't put in the microphone.

Installed mine yesterday - it's perfect. I love it.

I go to CD Changer setting so I still have all my SiriusXM settings so that's a relief. I didn't have a changer as to it's got the 6-disc in -dash so

It's got a very long cable for the mic! I could literally run it to the fr. pass. side if I wanted. I have kids so I actually opted for just above my seatbelt so it picks up back seat riders better.

I strongly recommend anyone that does not have this to get it, makes your ride way more tech relevant and enjoyable.
