Full Size Spare

Acura recommends the use of a full size spare if you are towing. Anybody here ditch the temporary spare for a full size spare?

A good number of people have done it. Here's some pictures I took when I upgraded back in 2008. Bought a hacked up (but straight) tech rim off ebay for $50, a slightly used Michelin Latitude tire, and had it mounted for $10.

Also a lot of others recommended a tire cover to keep things clean, especially since it sticks out from the bottom.

Since the Full size spare is lower to ground
wonder about safety ... even on 18 inchers.
I have 19x255x50 's.

Thanks!!! Looks great!!! Where did you get that tire bag? I wonder if this will work with my trailer hitch.

Did you get the full size spare because you tow?

Full Size Spare - Trailer Hitch

My 2007 MDX came with a full size spare tire. I installed the Valley Class III trailer hitch from etrailer.com and the spare still fits fine.

Got the bag from autozone's website for $17 shipped.

Not sure if they still have it, but it was the extra large size that covers 33 inches and 11.5 inches deep.

Don't tow at all, just wanted the security and piece of mind of having a full sized spare.

Anyone know if a full size spare will fit on a 2011 Advance model? Meaning the 19" wheel and tire.

THanks!

Acura recommends a full size spare when towing but never said mounted under. The 18 inch in picts above is too low for saftey. The 19 is even lower. Store inside SUV, on top, on rear, or within whay you are towing. There is a reason why Acura uses the space saver in the first place.

I think Acura uses the space saver to be cheap and save money. My Bimmers use to come with a full size spare mounted on a mag. Then they went to space savers, then they went to nothing because the cars came with run flats. It is all about the Benjamins.

The spare space/hole under the back of your MDX was not designed large enuff for a full size spare - esp the 19 inch
extra wide.
When you tow xyz the rear end sinks even more.

I think the compartment is large enough for a full size wheel when not towing. If not, where were you suppose to put your flat tire?

Carry it inside MDX, on top, in what u are towing, or with spare wheel attacment on rear. Honda only says full size not where.
The Advance stock P255 50 R19 tire is 29" Diameter and 12" Thick fully inflated.
The underside wheel well is 31" Wide shield to shield and 28" Long from bumper bolt to axle frame ... but there is a hose on drivers side that would hit the tire if it was full size as above thus requiring it be much lower or un-inflated.
Not wise putting a pound of coffee in a bag made for a half pound ...
