04-06 Transmission / Torque Converter Issues (my 2006)

Our 2006 MDX has been a dream vehicle thus far, but lately the transmission will occasionally grind with a slight hesitation around 40mph or so. My wife said she's tried to engage reverse a few times and it doesn't recognize it until after a restart of the vehicle.

I did a quick search and see the usual 01-03 tranny issues discussed, but not much about 04-06 MDXs. Outside of Azine, I searched and saw a re-occurring theme of a problem with 04-06 torque converters...anyone else experience this?

I'm taking the vehicle this week to the dealer as it has 64,000 miles and the powertrain on the 2006 is good through 70,000, but if they replace the tranny/torque converter, I'm afraid of falling into the same hassles the 01-03 owners experienced with their 2nd, 3rd, etc. trannies

Doesnt sound like the torque converter issues some are having. It does sound trans related though. Change the trans fluid lately?

Pray the Dealer is a fair one. Watch for high diagnostic fees. Hope it is not a serious issue for you...

"Sir, we could not replicate the problem."

So I had the tranny fluid flushed (it needed to be done anyway), so we'll see if that helps with the "grinding" issue.

However, my wife experienced the same reverse problem just yesterday (after the service)...although I've never had it happen to me and I drive it as much as she does. I'm trying to figure out if it's a PEBCASW issue.

Well, I think it's definately a PEBCASW issue considering my wife came home yesterday after driving my BRAND NEW Mazda 6 and said, "you know it's funny, your Mazda is doing the same reverse problem thingy".

Sigh.

I'm going to sit down with her and see exactly what she's doing but I think it's safe to say it's not a problem with EITHER transmission

And thus far, the grinding issue has not resurfaced thanks to the tranny fluid change. Perhaps it was low/dirty, I don't know, but it's been okay thus far...

^ speaking of wives...so I get my wife's 04 Civic all detailed & cleaned up for a private sale to a friend. I took about 4 hours doing the exterior, interior, etc. she goes home for lunch yesterday & on her way back to work backs into our neighbors car! WTF! They have an older Grand Am that nothing happened too but she shaved off all the paint on her bumper passanger side somehow. Dont know if the bigger MDX is a good idea.

You might want to consider changing your Trans Pressure Switches just in case your line pressure spec has gone out since you mentioned a grinding / hesitation in 3rd / 4th.

Do you think the dealer performed this known software update to the PCM to address TC symtom type issues?

My wires 04 mdxs tranny just went out. Torque converter and who knows what else. Crappy clutch material is to blame, we always had it serviced etc and to top it off Acura wouldn't pay for one penny of the repair. I'll never buy another Honda Acura vehicle again. I also have the local tranny shop using the raybestos clutches so hopefully the next owner wont have the same 3500$ issue. Nevertheless good luck!!!

Tranny update: so now our MDX decided it wouldn't downshift to 2nd even if you dropped the throttle to the floor + it just wasn't shifting right under any circumstance. In addition, the idle was getting rougher (which shouldn't be the tranny ). Suddenly the "check engine" light appeared :yippie:

Took the car in and they said my tranny was fine. The check engine light told the story: Cylinder 1 was misfiring and was causing the car to have a rough idle and would not allow proper acceleration (meaning no 2-gear drop downshift). They wanted to charge me $920 to fix the problem, but I finally convinced them it was a powertrain issue and was covered under the 70K powertain warranty (my car has 66K). So no charge

The car drives like new now...I'm wondering how long the misfiring has occurred or been gradually occurring. It definitely explains the behavior of the car recently.

I have a 06 MDX, in dec 09 torque converter replaced started again in feb 2010 had to wait till it got loud enough for them to hear, june2010 they replaced transmission/tc to soon to tell if this is the fix but from what I've read doubtful..they don't know what causes the problem so the car will be worthless before to long, only owed it for 8 months now, 59k and I am so sick about the whole thing, go to to edmunds.com and read all the same problems Honda doesn't know what the fix is, from what I've been told. Something needs to be done I will hire attorney if it comes back, Im more confident that it will before it won't.

My 06 MDX started doing the same thing the past few weeks. Around 40-45mph it studders when shifting up to the final gear. I hear a sound that sounds like a grind or vibration. I'm 2500 miles away from it's 90K service where I will be changing all the fluids. Hopefully that cures it. I almost want to trade it on a 08-09 now.

I have the exact same issue with my wife's 04 mdx. Around 40 mph I get this nasty grinding sound that lasts for a second or two. But I don't think its while changing gears, just when I cruising at 40 mph.

The car has 87k miles on it and is due for the 90k soon. I'll let my service station guy know about the sound. Hopefully just changing the tranny fluid will help.

Yeah my tranny flush solved the initial grinding problem on my vehicle (knock on wood). In your experience, does the problem resurface or is this a one-time phenomenon?

Hey 240sx..

Thanks for the input on the VTM fill. I was wondering if you guys have seen any TCC solenoids go out? When I'm cruising (in any gear), the moment I let off the throttle the RPMs drop below 1K.

My first gear seems like it's slipping / will rev to ~4k+ unless I let off before upshifting but if I manually shift from 1st - 2nd with the gear selector it's smooth.

Your input would greatly be appreciated. I was thinking about doing the VTM fill this weekend but wanted your input first.

Hi 240sx tech,
I'm new to the forum and wondered if the flush suggestion you made would help me with my "check engine light" alert. I have the 06 MDX w/140+ miles (lot of communiting). I got my oil change and that transmission fix from the dealer but don't want to get overcharged if this is something I can check out myself. Would appreciate your feedback. thx
