I was watching an old Top Gear (circa 2004) and they were saying that the C6 had rear leaf springs? Part of me thought that was hyperbole and I wasn't sure if that was true. Then I looked it up. Crazy but true. I had forgotten.

I'm assuming the C7 has gone to a fully-independent rear?
IIRC, it was a transverse mounted leaf spring, not like what you get on a truck.

That's an awesome option.

Yeah, I looked it up and saw that. Of course Hammond made it sound like the C6 shared its chassis with this:

TG (and most other Europeans really) get too hung up on making fun of older technology while totally dismissing the performance. They laugh at Ford for the Mustang's solid rear axle, the Vette for leaf springs, and the small block V8 for lack of DOHC but all of those older technologies still perform at the top of their respective classes so does it really matter? Just pure elitism in my opinion. Sure, I'd rather have IRS, DOHC, etc but not if its slower than a car with leaf springs, a solid axle and pushrods...

It helps play to the American bumpkin thing too.

Has the C7 gone around their track yet? I bet it will be quick.

Not that I've seen. I have DVR set to record all new TG on BBCAmerica, which means I'm a week or two from the actual date of the show (forget how long the gap is between it airing in the UK & showing on BBCAm)

In their defense, they do often give the faster vettes credit for being fun. Also, they love the price point of the C6 ZR1.

C1 had solid rear axle
C2-C7 all had independent rear suspension

+1, yup and unlike a truck it was a fiberglass mono-leaf spring

It didnt have Leaf "Springs" Dont think of it as a metal Leaf Spring like a Truck. Its NOTHING like it. Its a composite Transverse spring. The setup saves weight, acts as a spring and a swaybar at the same time.

Go pop your head under the back end of a Grand prix, Buick Regal (88- at least 2003) They all had the same type of composite transverse spring and its pretty easy to see.

I never paid a whole lot of attention to it because I never had any kind of serious interest in them. They were this thing out there that a lot of people liked that I never really understood ... Sort of like Cricket

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Specs Leaked

Luke Vandezande | Jan 07, 10:41 AM

Chevroletjust spilled the beans on the 2015 Corvette Z06, which apparently will come with 620 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque.

The company hasn’t officially released information on its latest hardcore sports car, but a Jalopnikreader spotted that running a “Google search” on the term “2015 Corvette Z06 supercar reveal” brings up a URL directly from the brand citing
those numbers.
With the official debut set to take place next week, more details are sure to slip out.

Unfortunately, the link shown in the screen shot here directs to a blank page. Leaked images reportedly showing the LT4 V8 show a supercharger and Chevrolet’s “oopsy daisy” seems to back that up. Regardless, 620 hp is a healthy increase over the old Z06 with 505 hp and a thick margin above the current Stingray’s naturally aspirated 455-hp LT1 V8. Perhaps most impressively, that also means the new Z06 has more torque than the ZR1 halo ‘Vette.

Yea, if those are the Z06 numbers, what will the ZR1 numbers be?

If they're over 700 hp, we're talking Aventador range and over.

everything that I was kinda "ehhh" or iffy about on the C7 has been solved by this Z06. I would go so far to say that I think this is the best looking car GM has ever made.

Rear diffuser still kinda bothers me. The front lip/fender liner looks crazy aggressive, not sure if I'm a fan. Side skirts and moar vents are nice though.

Love that hood.

Love the rear...the front is not bad but I do agree about the lip liner...makes the car a bit over-the-top.

Then again, maybe that's what GM is going after?

Maybe you better let this car sink in a for bit...the Cadillac line-up has some pretty amazing-looking cars too.

A convertible version of the Z06 is also to be offered apparently:

GTspirit can confirm that Chevrolet will also release a Corvette Z06 Convertible at some point in the near future. The Coupe version is set to debut at the Detroit Motor Show 2014 on Monday. Official pictures and limited details have already been leaked.

The Convertible version will be the first Z06 to drop its top since the one-off Z06 equipped Corvette C2 Convertible in mid 1960′s. Back then the Z06 package was an option fitted to just a small percentage of production cars. We’re told that the Z06 Convertible will be offered alongside the Coupe as part of the Corvette Stingray range.

As we mentioned above, we are not yet sure of the release time frame. That will probably become clear by Monday. We first saw the Corvette Stingray Convertible at the Geneva Motor Show 2013, following the release of the Coupe at last year’s Detroit Motor Show. It doesn’t seem impossible to think the Z06 Convertible might follow in the same way.

the Cadillac lineup hasn't had anything that I have been even close to this "wow"-ed by. I do enjoy the CTS-V but looks-wise it is - well - a Cadillac sedan.

btw the previous holder of this distinction in my head was the C6 ZR1.

You guys have a point. While it was obvious to more serious enthusiasts, they were some more casual people who couldn't tell from a glance a C6 from a C6Z. Hence the racey look.

The difference is quite obvious if that really is the C7Z.

Looking stunning in an appropriate shade of yellow (the official color of Corvette Racing) the Z06 promises to be the most track-capable Corvette ever with 620 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque!

Exactly how that amount of power will be generated isn’t confirmed but it’s believed Chevy will use a supercharged V8 – the high torque number seems to suggest forced induction.

Either way, the power bump is a significant increase over the factory 455 hp in the Stingray and that torque figure actually puts the new Z06 ahead of the ZR1.

But the Z06 is far more than just a horsepower upgrade. Notable design elements featured in the leaked photos show a massive carbon fiber rear spoiler, while perhaps more dramatic is the carbon fiber front splitter that integrates into the front fenders, pushing air over the front wheels to improve downforce.

The front angle of the Z06 also reveals large air intakes, likely used to cool what are no doubt up-sized brakes.

Look for more info on the Corvette Z06 when it debuts Monday, January 13th.
