Thinking of buying 2005 MDX....

Just want to see what the Acura gurus think of a 2005 MDX touring with 91k miles.

I have read that the mid-2000 MDX often has transmission problems; how do i know if this car is affected? I am dealing with a very reputable dealer, but can't hurt to be too safe.

What are some known issues? How do I know if the tranny will/will not be a problem? I have owned Acuras in the past and know they are fantastic cars but don't want to make a mistake here...thanks!

From my research the tranny issues seem to reveal themselves with nasty vibration and difficulty shifting. I believe there was a recall to resolve the issue. Also some software updates. If the price is right, and you have access to service records it could be a good buy. I think you're pretty close to a timing belt/water pump replacement at that mileage, which is probably an easy thousand or more in cost. Personally I would look for something with less miles

The "good" dealers (I use that lightly) will do the software updates for free. My Honda & acura dealers do at least.

I have never or will I ever buy a brand new car/truck.. I've had about 15 cars that were all over 100k except 1 which was 90k.

Never had an issue b/c from day one all major maintenance was done and they all drove perfectly. I'm not saying you'll never have to replace anything, but that's ANY vehicle..

If you're not buying some kind of replacement part for your car at some point, then you're not maintaining it, guarantee you that.

I have an '05 MDX and it has been incredibly reliable. It currently has 130K.

Things I have replaced due to normal wear, past 100K:
-Front Struts (did it myself, takes two people, $150 in parts)
-Timing Belt/Water pump (yes, $850 job at Acura)
-Power Steering O-ring/fluid flush (do it yourself, $35 worth of parts)
-Accessory belt (easily do it yourself, $40 belt)
-Passenger side engine mount (do it yourself, $50 part)

+tires and a couple of batteries

BTW, I am only a rookie mechanic. Most items I serviced using youtube and Acurazine tutorials.

My MDX looks really good for a 130K car (except for some recent minor hail damage), and it drives incredibly well and quiet. Everyone that rides on it cant believe how quiet it is for its age. No tranny issues, I figure they would have shown by now, dealer DID perform recall service.
Mine's a keeper.

I forgot, Check Engine Light comes on/off oftenly, was told by Acrua to replace the catalitic converter, however it passes inspection every single time. I'll replace when it fails emissions testing.
