Thumbs up Software Update Releasing Soon-Torque Converter

I just saw from a source that certain MDX's are going to do a software update that relates directly to the problem I had, a mild jerky feeling when driving from 20-40mph which relates to the torque converter. It's recall 12-029 from what I saw and is due to start sending out letters next month. I read that to build "confidence" in acura the warranty for 07 and other models has been extended to 8 years 105,000 miles! I hope this software update fixes the issue. If not, they stated they will replace it under warranty!

Is this for the 07-09 models? Because there was already a campaign for the 10-12 years.

Yes this is, it just came out. I called a few dealerships, since it came out 2 days ago, not every dealership has the updated software which comes in a disc, then their IT guys have to come set everything up. Yes this is for 07-09 MDX's.

The update in question pertains to 07 - 09. Your 2012 is not relevant, receipt not necessary.

No, this one only pertains to 2007-2009. I should have put that in the title. It applies to some RL's and TL's I believe.

SB 12-029 was applied today to my 2007 MDX. This is a software update for the lock-up clutch function. Apparently the same SB was issued for the 2005-06 Honda Odyssey -- look here for a copy.

Acura has also extended the warranty for the torque converter to 105K miles.

My complaint was harsh downshifts when letting up off the gas at certain speeds. (Example: letting off the gas at 20-22mph when coming up to a stoplight.) I felt a disconcerting "clunk."

I have 103K on the car now, no previous problems whatsoever. But having owned a 2001 MDX whose tranny died on me at 108K, I'm nervous.

MDX shifts much smoother now. and seems to be a little more peppy driving around now. before it seemed to lug a little when you accelerated like it was dragging it's ass.

i did read on MDXers that some were having a drop in MPGs after the reflash. i have not really noticed this...but will monitor. could be coincidence since we are now running on winter fuel.

I had my update done just a few weeks ago. I was out of warranty as my 2007 has 120k but Sunnyside Acura in Nashua, New Hampshire is great and did the service for free.

Unfortunately, I have not noticed any difference. It's ironic that I bought a vehicle with this issue because I have always been a stickler for silky smooth (auto) transmissions. I noticed it about 2 weeks after buying the MDX and at that point, around September 2011, they were not aware of any update. So I went for 17,000 miles with the exact issue Pete mentioned: "(Example: letting off the gas at 20-22mph when coming up to a stoplight.) I felt a disconcerting "clunk.""

I'm am starting to wonder if my transmission is just "too far gone" for this update to work. I have done the "three-change" transmission oil workup as well as changed the gearbox fluid. I've replaced the transmission temperature sensors as well as the shift solenoids. I think that after years of "clunking" there is simply physical damage and the software update is not helpful in my case.

Anyone else have this issue? I'm the second owner. I have all dealership records and the trans fluid was changed every 30k miles. It has been treated right. Maybe it is just at the end of its lifespan.

The software update didn't solve the problem.

I'll be back to the dealer this week and anticipate a warranty replacement of the torque converter. Will keep you posted.

Here is a copy of SB 12-029.

I received the notice from Acura a couple weeks ago and haven't had time to take my MDX in. I am not sure if the symptoms I am experiencing are part of the same problem or something else: I get a slight vibration and rumbling noise at the gas pedal immediately after the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd. This only seems to happen when accelerating gradually. If I punch the gas, it doesn't happen.

Has anyone else experienced the same symptom and will the software update resolve it?

I have, but it only happens one time when I first drive the car in the morning. The software update did not correct the issue. My symptoms are exactly like yours, give it a little bit of gas, and it doesn't happen.

I brought my 2007 MDX back to the dealer 2 days ago and demonstrated the problem on a road test with a technician. (The problem is a "jolt" or "shudder" that's felt when I take my foot off the gas after the car has been cruising at certain speeds such as 22mph or 57mph. Klunk.) The technician felt it and regarded the torque converter as the prime suspect. However, before authorizing warranty work, Acura corporate requires a scan from their diagnostic gizmo while the problem is experienced on road test, so they asked me to leave the car with them so that they could scan it.

They did, submitted the results to Acura, and were told the scan was "normal." Therefore wouldn't authorize torque converter replacement.

The dealer let me know the situation and suggested that I come back so they could redo the scan with me behind the wheel. So that's what I did this afternoon.

After resubmitting it, Acura corporate still said that the scan wasn't definitive, but the service advisor at Hopkins Acura, Redwood City, CA, went to bat for me. She told them, "Look, we've had two technicians who've felt the problem. No matter what the scan shows, there's a problem here, and it needs to get taken care of. You just say no, but don't think it's going to stop here."

And Acura yielded.

So my torque converter will be replaced as soon as the part comes in.

This is a relief, as the car now has 104,111 miles on it -- less than 900 to go before the 105K warranty on the torque converter expires. Maybe I won't have to revisit my nightmare of 6 years ago when the tranny went out on my 2001 MDX and Acura refused to help me out.

I just hope this takes care of things and I have a few trouble-free years ahead!
