I'm looking for an SUV for under 23,000 and have narrowed it down to with a MDX or a Touareg. From what I have seen, these are the best 2 CPO deals.

2006 MDX Base - Around 20,000 with 45,000 miles 2 owner car - the 2nd owner had it reprocessed after owning it 6 months. Probably why they certified it.

2006 MDX Touring - these are listed for around $20,000. Don't know how low they will go. Would 2 grand be an unrealistic offer?

2007 Touareg - 56,000 but certified with a 2 year warranty. Going to drive quite differently then the MDX but will get poorer gas milage. Need a warranty for these.

What do you think - the MDX is probably more reliable but will have less sporty of a feel I assume. Is an extended warranty necessary like it is for the Touareg? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

It is a no brainer to go with the mdx. The vw touareg is one of the most unreliable cars on the road. The 2 year waranty may not cover everything some are just the powertrain.
You definitely want the touring on the mdx (rain sensing wipers, bose, memory seats, 17" wheels and tires, etc.) GL with your search!

Also the acceleration is comparable to the v8

Do some research online about Touaregs and you will see the decision is quite simple.

X2! I flirted with the idea of getting one myself... until I read all the consumer reviews on edmunds, and a couple of magazine comparos. They look great, but they are typical VW quality. I wouldn't recommend a warranty on the MDX. 97K miles here, and the only problem I've had is an interior led go out behind one of the heated seats switches. Best car I have ever owned!

As others have said, stay away from the touareg. I was looking at an 05 V8 one to replace my 03 X5 4.4 with. The dealership let me take it for a 3 day test drive. It drove great and looked great but on the second day the car literally had an electronic meltdown. It failed to start twice and the headlights went out no less than three times while driving at night. Needless to say, I brought it back. Also, stay away from X5s as well...they are complete nightmares even though it was the best all around driving vehicle I have ever driven period. Btw I've been looking for an 07-08 MDX and have been seeing them in your price range but with slightly higher miles.
