MDX transmission problem !

Greetings.

I own a 2001 MDX & the transmission is starting to slip like crazy.

Do I have any recourse? Has there been any recalls or will Acura do the right thing? I doubt it is still under warranty.

Many thanks for your help.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the earlier MDX is notorious for transmission problems same to the likes of the 2nd gen TL and CL. You can talk to a local dealership but chances are they won't be able to help much.

79440. What is the "2nd gear inspection"? Never heard of that. Perhaps because I'm the third owner of the car, that information never made it to my ears. Many thanks for your help

You should be able to get it taken care of by Acura. They have a 100K warranty on Trans for 01 & 02 MDX's. It's a common problem.

Safety Recall: Automatic Transmission 2nd Gear Inspection
(Supersedes 04-013, Safety Recall: Automatic Transmission Second Gear Inspection, dated
November 12, 2004)
BACKGROUND
Certain operating conditions can result in heat buildup
between the countershaft and secondary shaft 2nd
gears in the A/T. Without enough oil flow to dissipate
heat, prolonged operation under these conditions can
eventually result in decreased material strength. In
higher mileage vehicles, this can result in gear tooth
chipping or, in very rare cases, gear breakage.
In most cases, A/T noise will indicate a problem,
however it is possible for the A/T to become locked
without warning. A locked A/T could result in a crash.
CLIENT NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be sent a
notification of this recall. There is a client letter
example at the end of this bulletin.
Not all vehicles within the VIN ranges are affected by
this recall. Before starting work on a vehicle, make sure
it is eligible by checking for one or more of these items:
• The client has a notification letter.
• The vehicle is listed on your campaign responsibility
report.
• The vehicle is noted as eligible when you do a VIN
status inquiry on the interactive network (iN).
Besides checking these items, also check for a punch
mark above the eighth character of the engine
compartment VIN. A punch mark there means the A/T
has already been inspected and repaired.
Some vehicles affected by this recall may be in your
used vehicle inventory. According to federal law,
these vehicles cannot be sold or leased until they
are repaired. Before selling a vehicle, do a VIN status
inquiry to check if it is affected by this recall

I know its an MDX but take this link for what TL owners have been through. A lot of good information in there about goodwill warranty's.

ShouldI be looking for this punch mark on the vin tag behind the windshield? Or is there another vin tag in the actual engine compartment? If it is in the engine would someone be able to point in the direction of where to look for it?

Thanks!

You'll get a new transmission as long as it's within 100K, I got my 01 CL-S a new transmission all taken care off by dealer (no cost at all out of my pocket) from Mike harvey Acura. Just have to grind them about it Good luck!

I owned a 2001 MDX until recently (traded for a 2007 MDX) and found out the 2001-2003 models have history of transmission problems. The only recourse is to get your transmission rebuilt which is approx $2500.

FYI - the 2003 got a new transmission, it was the 01-02 that had issues.

Interesting discussion. I have an 03 Honda Pilot (same engine & tranny as the MDX) and I am starting to experience tranny issues. Have 127,000 kms (not miles) on the clock and this past week on a long trip the "D" (drive) light started flashing on the dash. Also exerienceing a shudder when under light acceleration under 2,000 RPM. I wonder if the Pilot drivetrain is also covered under an extended warranty??? How do I find out if it had the recall done? - I am the 2nd owner

Call the Honda dealer and have them check your vin for any open recalls.

I have a 02 MDX with 75,000 miles, thinking of putting a B&M trans cooler on it. Will this affect warranty if trans goes bad.
