MDX Maintenance affecting mpg
I know i'm pretty new to this forum but I recently decided to try this out and I thought it would be pretty interesting so I wanted to share. I currently own a 2001 Acura MDX with 179xxx miles. I usually have been on top of maintenance and etc. but lately I have been "lacking". So I decided to start maintenance and do step by step to see how it affects gas milage. I actually started 2 gas tanks ago by getting a base mpg without anything performed so I could see what effects what. sadly at that time I was getting 14.5 mpg (calculated by miles traveled between fillups divided by how many gallons). I since then took my k&n filter removed it (quite gunky) cleaned and reinstalled. Since the last fill up I averaged 16.1 mpg which equals a 1.6 mpg improvement. Today I cleaned the throttle body and now I just need to give it a few days to drive my vehicle around and see what improvements if any occcur. I did notice a slightly better idle and seems smoother as well as far as power my "butt dyno" can't tell a difference but like I originally said this is to calcuate mpg. I am trying my best to not change driving habbits at all and since every week I do about the same driving trips hopefully I will see the differences.
base: 14.5 mpg
clean air filter: 16.1 mpg
clean air filter: 16.1 mpg

The difference in the quality of gas between the 2 fill ups could contribute a 1-2mpg fluctuation. So could the difference in air temperature/humidity the weeks you measured this. Too many variables IMO. Not a bad thing to catch up on maintenance though.

Well so far the weather has been comparable here, and the only other thing I am doing is filling up at the same station with the same grade. Maybe it won't be exact but if anyone is at all intereted I could continue posting if not then i'll just continue for my own information/maintenance lol.
