L-003: what can the MDX really tow

i have a 08 MDX and have towed our 18' fishing boat just fine, also will tow the jet skis and fourwheeler fine as well. We are trying to see if it will tow our 20' crownline. I believe the MDX is raited for 5000 pounds, the boat weighs right at 5000. Should I be worried, or will it be fine. We only tow the boat twice a year about 30 miles. Thanks.

I know someone who tows a 27' Camper close to 5000lbs and he said it does fine. 30 miles twice a year shouldnt be a big deal. Give it a test run and see how she feels.

The boat weighs in at 5K or the boat and trailer weigh in at 5K? If it is the boat itself and the 5K is the weight the manufacturer gives out, it won't include fuel, fresh water (if you have a fresh water tank) life jackets, coolers full of tasty beverages and samwiches, and all the other miscellaneous goodies that go on the boat.

Also remember that when the boat is coming out of the water, it probably has some water in the bilge. Pulling the boat out is the most stressful part for the car (unless you drive through the mountains to get to the water).

Id say you are right at the limit and with Acura's previous history of making subpar transmissions, I'd be a little nervous. Then again, you are only towing it 2x a year but I would still look for a friend with a real truck (no offense MDX owners) with a bit higher towing capacity to help you out 2x a year.

i think the loaded weight is about 5k w trailer and goodies. i guess its probably not worth it, seeing all the trans problems from the cl's tl's and old mdx's. The reason we were thinking about doing this was to sell our yukon and get a car for better mpg. Its a 99 yukon with 70k on it, in this economy probably worth only 5-6k. i guess its worth it to keep it seeing a new trans for the mdx is probably around that price.

If you did have an tranny issue, it's difficult to tell Acura you never towed when you have a tow hitch installed.

I would hope that after the fiasco with the old trannys and all the money Acura put into replacing them that they would have learned their lesson but I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig to find out.

the GVWR which is the total combined weight of all passengers, tow weight & tongue weight is 5,962 lbs. For every 1000ft in elevation you decrease the load rating by 2%. The tongue capacity is 5-10% of total boat trailer weight. You can estimate tongue weight by taking the difference between the height of the tongue with the load on it and the height of the low part of the trailer. For every 1/2" that he tongue dips lower then the height of the trailer is equivalent to 175 lbs of tongue weight. So if you tongue is 1" lower it has approximately 350 lbs on it. All of this should be in your owner's manual. If your 20' weighs 5000lbs alone then the X won't be able to tow it safely. You'll burn out your trans. In all honesty.. I wouldn't tow anything more than 2000 lbs with the X.

So next time you do the tow math:
Weight of all Pax
Weight of total tow
+ Weight on tongue
Gross Vehicle Weight

As long as your Gross Vehicle Weight is less than 5,962 lbs you are within the safe limits.

damn 5 min edit limit.. anyways..

The total tow includes anything you have piled into the boat that is not part of its rated weight and anything that is piled in the X like a cooler full of cold frosty beer..
