How often do you upgrade the Navi?
I have a 2010 MDX, so my system is fairly up to date. How often do people generally update the Navigation disk? Every year, 2 years, 3 years??

I would upgrade every year if Navteq was doing a good job of updating their data base, but from I have experienced (they still have not updated a major state highway relocation near my home that is 3 years old) and read. They seem to have more updates for Canada then they do for the USA. Acura used to have the best navi system available; not so anymore.

Since it's not a cheap upgrade, my plan is about every 3 years. We're on an 09 upgrade disk now and we haven't had a problem yet. We bought the car in 09 and it still had the original 06 disk, and there were some noticeable deficiencies.

Its $185 for an 06 MDX.
I don't know how you'd get it into your car without a disk. In fact in our 06 the disk stays in the car.

I find the Acura navigation system in my 09 Elite to be so useless (hard to search, many missing POI, etc) that I will probably never bother to upgrade. Seriously, it's so aggravating entering in "McDonalds" or "Home Depot" and having to guess what category the nearest POI might be in.
For $185 I could buy a much more functional handheld GPS. I paid $125 for a Garmin and it is so much easier to use.

As far as the upgrade, I was reading somewhere that you put the navi disk in the cd drive and the system will recognize what it is. It'll give you 2 download speed options, the faster of which locks you out of the navigation while it is updating.

Unless your area has changed drastically and you use the new roads and/or POI's then I would not bother to ugrade the software. Your $175 will get you to a couple of new restaurants in your city and list about a 1000 other ones across the country that you will never go to. If the upgrade was $10 then I would go for it every 2 or 3 years.

Can't you type in the name "McDonalds" or "Home Depot" and then select from "current position"?
I am thinking about getting an MDX and would be concerned if this feature is no longer available.
Please let me know. Thanks.

Heres the thing. If you live in a very populated area where streets are added or new businesses are added/close/relocate, id do it every 1-2yrs. If you travel alot on business and use your vehicle, odds are you can write it off on your taxes. If you live in a medium sized city, doing it 2-3yrs maybe ok for you depending on how slow/fast your city is growing. Also if your city (or a city you travel to frequently) has XM Traffic, it could benifit you to get updated disc more often as XM could add more heavily traveled streets to do traffic updates for.

I purchased my 2008 MDX in Dec '08 but it came with a 2007 CD
So I updated in mid-2011, but of course the data is really based on 2010
Considering a 2013 upgrade @ $99. It's funny, you think there are no new roads here but we found a couple in the last 2 years that weren't on the map. Not to mention restaurants and other establishments.
I guess it is not a necessity but nice to have.

I have upgraded my 2004 1 time in 2007. Check to see if there is any changes done before ordering a new disk. I'm in real estate and use the Navi a lot. The 2007 disk still works fine for me. There hasn't been much development in Northern California to need an upgrade. Check that the area you need updated is even available on the new disk.

I have a 2013 MDX and the only thing I despise from it is the GPS. The main issues I have are:
80% of the time it gives absurd directions.
Most of the time it will not suggest a left turn on an avenue, even when it is a legal turn.
The detail inset for highway exits may display a different thing than what the bigger map is showing.
In NY it ignores many major high ways and routes me through smaller roads (I have it set to maximize highways and there is no traffic issues).
Many people at Acurazine seem to agree on the bad directions. I asked my dealer and Acura itself and both are oblivious to the problem.

OK - got the new Nav disk ... but -
Installed the new nav disk. It updates the Nav Software (I guess) and then it asks if you want to update the maps (dumb question). I knew it said Ihad to have my password ready, so I got the little card out & was ready. When it asks, it wants a friggin' 16 digit password! Where do you find that?
