Another 2012 MDX oil consumption question(s)
Hello,
I am new to the AcuraZine site, great forum and have been reading for years yet just signed up! Had an oil consumption question on my 2012 MDX. Has 28K miles, bought CPO a couple of years ago with 3K on the odometer. Car is consuming oil, no smoke or leaks, however very sooty in tail pipes. Started the oil consumption test at the dealer. I'm almost done with the test, but at 4,100 miles thus far the dealer has added about 3.0 quarts. This seems very excessive.
Anyone out there have this issue or dealt with Acura about this? From what I've read on the forum, Acura seems to think it's OK to burn 1QT/1,000 miles which is totally bogus!
Thanks in advance for any feedback of suggestions.
Bryce

I'm about 1/2 quart every 2,500-3,000 miles. I purchased my MDX used with 30,000 miles (a little under 60,000 miles now) and switched to Mobil 1 syn oil on the first oil change. I don't know if my MDX used more/less/same amount of oil before the change. My TSX and RDX use zero oil between changes and they both have +120,000 miles (also on Mobil 1). Syn oil might increase the problem since syn oil is 'slicker' and might squeeze past worn rings/seals easier (might be the reason for my oil consumption).
I think Acura will tell you that is 100% normal and within its allowable limits for oil consumption. If the oil is not leaking, then it might be getting past the cylinders rings. Poor fuel economy, dirty combustion chamber, fouled plugs, pre-detonation/knocking issues, clogged/dirty Catalytic converter that might fail, and other emmission problems might be possible problems down the road.
In the good old days when engines were lucky to go past 100,000 miles. I would use Engine restore in the oil to keep it from smoking as much:Engine Restorer
I don't know how these modern engines would react to something like this or if your oil consumption problem could be slowed with this product?

OP: our 2010 MDX with 50K miles on it has zero oil consumption issues. We have used full synth from 5K miles through the present. Our engines are the same 3.7 ltr V6. If I was consuming as much oil as you say your 2012 is doing, I would be concerned.
