2g mdx and throttle lag

I mentioned in another thread that I test drove a 2007 MDX tech. I just want to state that I was very dissaponted in the fact that there was considerable throttle lag. It had enough power once the lag was over, but it was a literal 3-5 second delay between me mashing the gas pedal, the engine revving and the transmission down shifting.

Did I test a dud? Should I try again?

It might have been because of the age of the vehicle and the unknown state of maintenance. The MDX is one heavy beast to get moving off the line with a lot of drive train loss with sh-awd (maybe around 30%-40%). In 100% city stop/go driving, I'm lucky to get about 14-15 mpg in the MDX compared to 18-19 in the RDX. Driving a +10 MDX with the 6AT will help with off the line acceleration. I find it easier to ramp up the speed on my 6AT MDX until I get to the vtec range compared to just mashing the gas pedal (or TQ braking) to make up for the turbo lag with the 5AT RDX.

I guess it could have been a factor of poor maintenance. Possiblly dirty throttle body, weak fuel pump, old plugs, bad gas....etc. The MDX I drove was on a dealers lot for well over a year. Barely moved in that time. I know because it was in that spot for well over a year.

The MDX is certainly heavy, but for me, I found that the engine was adequate, just the horrid delay that really turned me off. Someone is coming to look at the RDX today...not so sure I want to sell it anymore. I have to go test drive another elite model today and see if it is the same experience.

Btw thanks for your replies, you make the more dead portions of the forum less dead.

You know I really did consider doing that. If I get an MDX, I absolutely will get this installed. I read a thread that someone put a k&n air filter and apparently that REALLY helped.

I have noticed the lag as well. have a '13 MDX and the lag is very pronounced as I exit my driveway and immediately climb a 5% grade. Like other posters mentioned , it a factor of weight, drive system power loss I assume. Launching in S mode improves the acceleration slightly .
