02 MDX steering very hard to turn in corners

In park, the steering moves left to right with no issues. When turning a corner, the steering is loose for about an 1" turn then looses all power and I have to "hulk" it to continue turning the steering wheel. Wife almost crashed due to this. Power steering is at level, though I noticed it was very dark. I suctioned it out and added new fluid up to level and turned on the MDX and turned the steering wheel all the way left to right, then suctioned that fluid out and it was slightly lighter than the first flush. I added more fluid up to level and turned the wheel a few times and then took it for a drive and still sticks at every turn. There are no leaks that I can see. What do you guys think? I'm hoping it's the power steering pump. I wanted you guy's opinion before I went a head to replace it.

I had an old 97 Honda Accord doing exactly the same thing and the fluid was used motor oil dark. Took it to Honda to flush/replace and it was back to normal after that. If you never replaced the power steering fluid, it might broken down a bit and just be contaminated with dirt, metal shavings and moisture. I now flush my power steering at 100,000 miles for my vehicles (usually a one and done maint during the life of the vehicle). I think Acura charged me $75 on my TSX the last time I did the flush.
