tv tuner

Asiankidd,

I just have a ghetto home vcr hooked up at the moment in my car so I can watch videos and receive some tv channels off the vcr.
Reception is pretty bad overall, I tapped into the car radio antenna for a signal (which receives channels 2-7 fine) and put on a cheap dipole antenna (which seems to receive channels 9-13 better), but when I combine them, the effect doesn't seem to be cumulative. Maybe with the addition of two antennas, the impedance becomes off or some of the signals overpower the weaker channels. I'm not sure. I'm still trying to work on the antenna position to get things working well. I might try and get an antenna filter too, or rf amplifier at a later time.

At any rate, tv reception is decent when the car is stopped but becomes choppy when the car is in motion. If you get a tuner tv built for cars with a diversity receiver, the reception will be slightly better. A diversity receiver uses multiple antennas usually 2 or 4 and rapidly switches between the anteannas to get a more accurate signal. This switching helps to reduce multipath interference and doppler effect that occurs when you have a moving receiver. You could get this more expensive tv tuner option, but I don't think the quality would improve much to justify the extra cost. Bottom line: with antiquated tv broadcasts (analog am and fm with sideband mumbo jumbo) covering a wide range of frequencies, there is no good way to receive tv in a moving car unless you consider very expensive >$1000 receiver/antenna systems.

sorry no pics yet. nothing much to see anyhow.

If you want to check it out, maybe we'll bump into each other at another meet or just visit sometime. Fullerton and Anaheim Hills ain't exactly far away.

There is a Dvd with built in regular tv tuner made by Pyle. That is the only one I've seen. Should cost around $225. I'm thinking about getting that for my car at some point. Haven't seen this selling in any local stores, but it does appear on ebay every now and then.

I think a guy named Neastor on the Honda Oddesey board has done something like this. Also someone on here. I was thinking about it yesterday as well. Let me know if you get any info.

I'm not familiar with Hi-fi Buys, but I'd say most retail shops would not want to mess with this kind of thing. I've already tried asking around and no one would take responsibility for messing up the navi system. I think some members on this board have a rearview camera hooked up. You can either get the Japanese Inspire spoiler with the rear camera built in, or you can go about trying to put your own camera in somewhere.

Nice and clean. I like that blue light under the driver foot well. How did you wire that up and how much it cost?

footwell light

I put in four neon footwell lights in the car, two underneath the dash and two underneath the front seats to provide illumination for all four footwells. Cheap mod, but everyone seems to marvel at it. I got the front two tubes from WalMart, surprisingly. Only $10 a tube! They were too long to fit under the seats, so I got shorter ones from AutoZone for $19 a tube.

I wired them all together, connecting the +12v to constant power. I connected the Gnd of the lights to a SPDT switch. One terminal of the switch I connected to Gnd. One terminal I connected to the door trigger wire (located in the passenger fuse box) going through a diode first. This arrangment allows the lights to come on whenever a door is opened and when the car is first disarmed, just like the domelight. I can also flip the switch and leave them on permanently, like while cruizin. Or I can leave the switch in the middle position and have the lights disabled.

The neat thing about the install, is I concealed all the lamps and wires. You'd never know they were even in there until they light up at night.

Ok, so don't y'all go out copying me now.

how to keep your navi from being an energy miser

footwell lights?: I did install an "off" switch if I ever did get tired of them. Then I can turn them back on for "mood" lighting when needed.

I was irritated that the navi screen would self-power down whenever the vehicle was stopped with the engine off after only a couple minutes of inactivity. This is fine for navi purposes, but not for video-on-my-navi purposes. You can keep it from shutting down by entering the diagnostic mode each time you watch (menu+map+cancel), but that ended up being a chore for me. I demanded a better solution.

There is a wire going into the small 8 pin connector of the navi trunk unit that is white and blue near the top of the connector. This is the "engine on" signal wire. It delivers a +12V signal to the navi trunk unit whenever the engine is on.

You can mod this simply by cutting the wire and connecting the end that goes to the navi trunk unit to accessory switched +12V, leaving the other end of the wire disconnected. If you don't cut the wire and splice in +12v, you'll blow your accessory relay fuse and activate your SRS, check engine lights. I know this, cause that's what I did at first.
With this arrangement. You'll never ever seen your "This system will shut down no to conserve battery" screen again.

Another, perhaps better, way of modding this wire is to use two diodes or a standard SPDT relay. If you use the relay, you would connect the "engine on" wire that goes to the navi trunk unit to the common terminal, connect the other end of the "engine on" wire to the N.C. terminal, and connect the N.O. terminal to +12v. For the coil of the relay, connect one terminal to gnd, and the other terminal to the same switched power that activates your "video" mode.
If you use the diodes instead, then use one diode to connect the cut "engine on" wire back together. Connect the striped end (cathode, aka, negative end) of the diode to the wire going to the navi trunk unit. Connect the anode end of the diode to the wire coming from the front of the car. Now connect the second diode, again with the cathode end going to the "engine on" wire into navi trunk unit, but connect the anode end of this diode to the +12v switched power that becomes active whenever you enable your "video" mode.

Using either the diode or the relay method, the navi screen will never shut off while your "video" mode is enabled, but will shut off like normal after a certain period of inactivity in the "navi" mode with the engine off.

So take your pick of methods. I think the second way is better. I used the two diode method in mine. The first way is much easier to implement. You just cut the "engine on wire" and splice it with the accessory power wire that's in the same 8 pin navi connector.

PS: When hooking up diodes to wires, it's best to wrap the end of a wire to the diode terminal and solder it on. Follow up with electrical tape and heat shrink tubing to make a really solid, vibration-resistant connection.

no Pioneer RGB1

I could not find the Pioneer joint so I ordered this Clarion RGB to Composite Converter. It should work. Good DVD players run $300 and up...or just get the Playstation.

UH OHH

Guys,
Since I just bought the Clarion RGB Converter to replace the pioneer AVC-RGB1, did Imake a mistake. The part I ordered is "RGB to composite" as opposed to "composite to RGB"....does it matter, or is it the same

it wont work...your video source is a composite signal and the navi need the rgb...the one you got is vice versa....no help there

Nice looking unit. That remote control looks very basic. I hope it can control all the dvd and tuner functions. Is that what you're planning on putting in your car, Simon? Return the PS/2 to home duty.
