Can gash on tire sidewall be repaired?

One of those things which happens after the wife has been driving
Propped open with a pen in the picture.

Can that flap simply be glued back? Is it a DIY or do I have to go to a tire shop? If DIY, I'd appreciate some guidance.
Also, can this cause the the tire to be unbalanced? I have noticed a slight shaking in the steering wheel around 70mph (gash is on a front tire).

A gash on the sidewall cannot be repaired. The sidewall flexes too much for any patch to stay glued or vulcanized on.

No reputable tire shop would attempt to repair a sidewall, and for safety's sake you should not even consider a sidewall repair.

would definitely get that tire swapped out.. sidewall damage is bad and prone to unpredictable blow outs.

That doesn't look too safe, you should get it replace as soon as possible.

Tire sidewall repair

I had 5,000 miles on mine, when I hit a piece of concrete, protruding from a curb.
Had to replace the tire. Lucky for me I had an extended warranty, from Firestone dealer, (Bridgestone), which I purchased when the car was new. Cost $135, for all 4 tires; (road hazzard warranty). Ended up getting a brand new EL 42, for $40, including installation & tax.
Only problem was the rim was slightly bent, & mI had to put the new tire on the rear, because it couldn't be balanced properly; ( shimmy in wheel)

I agree with Ron A 100%. Sidewall repairs are not recommended for safety concerns. I'd recommend replacing the tire with a new tire that is similar to your old tire.

You need a new tire. Sidewall punctures cannot be fixed.

Now you have a good excuse to get rid of the crappy EL42s and get some real tires!

As you still have the old Turanza EL42 PVC, have your dealer replace all of them with the reformulated EL42 TU2. It's free!

Free? how exactly do you do that? I haven't heard of a recall on these tires.

Ron - is there a limit to how many miles you can have on the tires before you go in and get them swapped?

TBone2004 - As long as you have the old El42 PVCs, you can request the change to TU2s regardless of miles. Someone from this site had 16000 miles and still be able to swap.

As mason1125 said, I don't think there is a mileage limit, and there is nothing in the Vibration Work Sheet about it, so check with the dealer.

cool - save me from having to buy a new set. they are the original ones - not the reformulated. reforms not my first choice - but a free set of shoes is a free set of shoes
