All Season Tires for 2010 AWD 6-speed
To the TL experts here @ Acurazine (I am NOT one),
I have stock/OEM 19-inch wheels with "Summer Tires". Those won't fly here in Nebraska come November. I have to put all season wraps on the 19's. I have a kid in college and two in high school, so the budget just won't absorb a set of wheels/tires just for the winter months. I know, sad, huh, but true. A man has to know his limitations, right?
I want to put 255/45's on the 19 inch wheels. I have the 245/40's on them now. My question to those that are in the know on these things: Can I put all-season 255/45's on the factory/OEM 19's? Any problems with this desire?
Thanks for the feedback. I am grateful. Remember, I said at the top I'm no expert!!

I just put a set of Conti DWS on my summer wheels right before the winter. It handled the first couple boston storms beautifully, but i then put on my winter stockies w blizzaks for the rest of the onslaught..
I think the DWS's can handle winter just fine and are a good all around tire

Thanks. Any advice on the 255/45's versus the current 245/40's? Any clearance issues? Don't have to have the 255/45's, but would like a bit more width and a bit larger sidewall.

So the "tire" guys I have spoken with tell me this:
The 245/40 R19 I have currently is 9.6" wide and 26.7" tall. The 255/40 R19 is 10" wide and 27" tall. The 255/45 that I want would be 10" wide and 28" tall and the clearance would definitely be an issue. Go with the 255's if you want, but you have to remain at the 40 aspect ratio. You can't go with the 45 aspect ratio on the 255's.

I wouldn't keep up the aspect ratio by itself to a 45, that will throw everything off... Have to keep it a 40, 255 vs 245 is preference... On stocks i'd probably run 245. I run 255/35/20 on my wheels which are i believe 8.5 wide.

All stock 4G TL wheels are 8" wide. There's really no point in doing 255's. All you are going to do is cut your options just about in half. If you can hold out a month or two, I would suggest waiting for either the Continental DWS06 or the Pirelli P-Zero A/S. Those are going to be the two top high performance all-season tires when they are released, along with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3. The Continental will begin rolling out next month and the Pirelli is already underway. I called Pirelli about the P-Zero A/S in a 245/40R19 for a customer yesterday. They said that size is about to go into production and should be available in a couple months.

No hurry - the snow won't fly until November here in Nebraska. I am going to wait for the DWS06. Hope they have the 19's in production by then. Thanks folks for the advice.

Second, if you're trying to put something on for use in the snow, you're going in the wrong direction if you're going wider.
I won't comment on clearances, since you've already seemingly satisfied yourself about that.
Thanks for your comment BDogg...I just got my wheels changed over, and was told that my summers are on their last season. Your advice is food for thought.

And decided it best to stay with the 245's after reading more about changing the width. Point taken, and already understood, about the snow and width. I just like the wider look, albeit only a small increase. No matter - good feedback here, which is why I asked for help. The DWS06 245/40/19's once my go to tire shop can get their hands on a set.

Hey Bdogg,
Appreciate the advice. Been trying to find information about the DWS06 245/40/19's online in terms of availability. No luck. Any insight on how to find out when these will be available? Just asking.....so thanks in advance.

Who is your local dealer you are working with? TireRack already has them in stock in that size. If you have a Discount Tire near you, I'm sure they can get them in for you too.

Putting the DWS06 on the car next weekend. 245/40/19.
5,200 miles since April 25th.
305 HP, SHAWD, and the 6MT create a unique car and a unique driving experience. I love driving this car. I'm glad I found it. 57,800 miles and counting....

Let us know how you like them. I think you're the first member on this forum to have them. Continental has said they've greatly improved the overall wear and sidewall durability with the 06 model over the original DWS.

The DWS06 went on July 11th with 57,972 miles. Not going to really push it through corners just yet, but noticed right away that they absorb road imperfections better than the Pilot Sport A/S. Will see how they perform under "enthusiastic cornering" after I put a few miles on them first.

Though they have yet to be tested against each other, I would bet the A/S3 is a better wet and dry tire and the DWS06 is a better snow traction tire.

58,900 mile check in....The car will be 6 years old on 9/16/15. 1,000 miles now on the DWS06. Not much opportunity for spirited and enthusiastic driving so cant really provide feedback on the performance traits of the tire. It looks nice on the car with the OEM 19's I think, though noticed that my, now ex-tire guy, scratched the rims when mounting them. Fairly noticeable up close on three of the four. Went back and showed my regular tire tech (he was on vacation the day they were installed) and said "that could not have happened here". So now that the RDX needs skins, they wont get the chance to scratch those wheels. Change is good, right?
Will report back after next trip back home to Des Moines. I know places there for which this car yearns. Winding roads with elevation changes that will provide a perfect canvas on which this car can paint with it DWS06 brush.
