What do you guys generally average for gas mileage? Simply curious.
I've always wanted to own, DD, a manual, but would've had to pass up way too good a deal on for my first car. Now at 23 years old, I finally own my first manual. I've been driving them since I was 18 (yeah, slightly late start), and having never owned one until now I obviously never witnessed first hand the "manuals generally get better gas mileage" (though I believed it obviously), until now. I've read a few people talking about what kind of gas mileage they get and being shocked at how low it was....
So, I'm curious. What kind of gas mileage do you guys generally get?
Please state:
Your gearbox: manual or auto
Mods: if any, to gauge how it'd effect MPG
Where you typically drive: mostly highway, mostly city, half/half
Your driving style: you can describe this any way I'm sure
And what you've noticed you get for MPG

~75% city: 23-25 mpg
90%+ hwy: 30-32 mpg
Driving: Generally tame with some outbursts of 2nd and 3rd gear accelerations. When tame, upshift ASAP. On the 5AT, 3rd gear can be manually shifted in at 10mph, 4th gear at 19 mph.

50/50 (city/highway)
I drive as you described. Generally tame, with outbursts. For me it's generally tame, I'll generally hammer one gear, but not necessarily to redline, once or twice a day, other than that I baby the car. Weekends I'll rip a lot more....
With all that including the 50/50 (city/highway), if I'm really nice, I'll average 27-28mpg, if I'm a little more aggressive, I'll average 25-26mpg, consistently 26 mpg though. Best I ever had was a trip from the Twin Cities here to Grand Forks, ND for a buddy's wedding. I was driving around 80 the entire time, 75-85 traffic depending, and on the way out there my computer told me I averaged 30mpg....I always manually check it as well and my actual was 31mpg! Could not believe it.
Then on the return trip to the Twin Cities, I averaged a measly 27mpg hahaha, granted I had a nasty headwind for the first 60 miles and a nasty side wind after that, 20-25mph with 30-40mph gusts.

The difference in MPG between a manual and an auto are no where near where they were before the 2000s. What matters the most these days is the overall gearing the manufacturer decided to use. I know in my 2006 Scion tC, the manual actually go lower MPG than the auto version did. It had to do with how short the final drive ratio was in the manual.
In the TL, the auto and manual both get around about the same MPG. Driving style will impact your MPG more than anything. There are plenty of threads on here discussing MPG already. Automatic transmissions have gotten quite a bit more efficient.....but still not as much fun.
Summary:
City Driving - 15-27
- depends on speeds
- depends on how much stopping
- depends greatly on driving style
Highway Driving - 25-35
- depends on speed mostly
- stay at 55mph, you will jump into the 30s
- go over 70mph, you start dropping into the upper 20s

5th gear can be engaged at 38mph on the 5AT, however it is more efficient at 50mph, torque converter lockup happens right there (as long as you're not in rapid acceleration).

I was just surprised I can get nearly highway mileage in city. Never have I ever had that with an auto. Logically, it makes sense, but it just shocked me having never witnessed it from personal experience....

There is a high correlation with what the MID reads in average MPH/MPG to what your actual MPG will be. Every city is different and claiming a percentage of city/highway is not as accurate as saying what your MID MPH says.
In general, if your TL has a MID MPH of 26 MPH or lower you're driving in a city/urban environment and your mileage will be < 20 MPG. Once you get in the open road with MID MPH values in the 40+ range, you can expect to get 25+ MPG.
I have been doing my MPG at fueleconomy.gov for 9 years now and the TL is remarkably consistent. If my MID reads 27 MPH, the estimated MPG reads about 18 MPG and the actual will be 17.9. Where as if I go on the highway, the best I got was a 69 MID-MPH 30 MID-MPG and actual 31.4. It's tough averaging 69MPH over hundreds of miles so I was cruising pretty fast that time.

According to my trip computer, over the last 1500 km or so, I've gotten a steady 9L/100km combined mileage.
I'll translate that into 'murican: 932 miles, 26.13 MPG.
I can easily get 6L/100km on the highway (39.02 MPG).
08 5AT, no mods, 65,000 km mileage (40k miles), riding on Bridestone Turanzas 3-seasons, Conti EWC winters.
Overall I consider the mileage to be pretty damn good for a 7 year old sports sedan.

2005 6mt has some exhaust mods, although I doubt that effects anything.
24-28 typical mixed city/highway. I have gotten as good as 31 or 32 on a tank--all highway through the mountains. 22 is probably the worst I've ever gotten from a full tank. I do not drive like a grandma, but I'm generally going about 10 over which may or may not help :o

According to the indicator, currently at 21 MPG, all city
On the highway at 80 MPH, it read low 30s MPG
Have not had a chance to do the division calculation for MPG yet, as Im still on the first tankful after purchasing the car

I'm pretty easy on the throttle most of the time, maybe 3k rpm max with some spirited driving here and there. My gas mileage got better when I cleaned the EGR valve + new EGR seals for the first time at 145k miles (which had a LOT of carbon build up at that point)
