After many happy, and mostly trouble-free years i'm getting ready to part with my 2004 w/Nav and only 76k miles. KBB says the value is about $7,400.

Has anyone traded in a similar vehicle? I'm wondering what I can realistically expect from a dealer or Car Max.

Not sure on trade in but with that low miles and with NAV I would make an attempt to sell it private party.. I would think you can get at least 9,000 private if the vehicle is in good shape.

thanks, yeah, auto trader pricing is around $9k for similar cars in the 90-100k range. I'm amazed at how well this car has held its value given I paid about $35k more than 11 years ago.

I would try to trade it soon because the 110,000 service is going to be due soon and that's pretty expensive

if they offer my Type S for $9k @88k miles I am sure that your won't be $7.4k for trade in, BTW my TL had all the maint done mostly at dealer since day 1. $5.5k-$6.5K is a better figure also you might want to watch out for the interest rate on the new loan if they do give you the trade in number you wanted. typical saleman tatics is "how much you want to pay a month?"

i've already done the timing belt/water pump, about the only thing coming up soon are another round of brakes.

Possible for you to sell the car on your own instead of trade-in? That's what I would do. You can get $7500-8000 for sure selling to a private party then use that money for the new car. Dealership is likely going to give you $5500-6000 as truonghthe stated.

but dealer has another trick in their sleeve, they simply say "well if you trade in you can save on the sale tax" e.g $47,000 x 6% (just a make up rate) = $2822 in tax. Then most people went in dealer trade too lazy to list their car for sale and all the hassle phone call so they just bite the bullet and going with dealer roller coaster ride. Some dealer better than other at the way they treat their customer in the finance department.


The smartest move would be get a pro details shop to work in side and out of your car (which can help increase the value about $500-$1000 or more base on the current market), takes good pics also help your car being sold quicker. To me there is nothing else turn me off after clicking on the ads and see shitty picture like seats half visible, blurry pics etc.. (If you can't take pics then ask for friend or other family member to and no you don't need a pro camera either Iphone pics will work just fine) also take pics of any paint defect on the car. Then records...records...records the chances of your buyer will likely buy is much higher than if you said XYZ was done at XXX miles by yourself or shop WITHOUT paperworks, dealer services receipt is a huge A++++ especially with oil change interval and other repairs. When my mom bought her 2000 Accord V6 coupe from a lady who almost got butt rape on trade in for a brand new 2005 MDX for a fair price on the market but her car has services receipt from dealer since bran new about half inch thick. So we bought the car off her without hesitation and yet the car still reliable as of today with 150k miles on the clock.

Look up the NADA value that's what dealerships base their trade in values on. They also take into account the price of the car you're looking to buy and if there's any rebates on it.

Don't trade your car in. Most dealerships lowball the hell out of you- and most people take it because they're excited to get into something new.

You'll get a lot more money if you sell it yourself. It may take a bit longer, but I'm sure you'll be happier with the extra money at the end of the day.

Sell privately. stealerships (dealerships) will low ball you and then try to get you into a car you don't really even want.

It amazes me how much cheaper TL's are elsewhere. An 04 with Navi and 74k would go for 10-12k here. Heck, there are 06's w/out Nav on Craigslist here for 12.5k with 120 on the odo.

I have an '04 with 64k (non nav) in great condition and was offered $7,000 from CarMax and up to $8,500 from an Acura dealer if I did a trade-in. At the time I was thinking of upgrading and I just wanted to kick the tires, but I'm holding on to her and most likely will even when I do decide to get something else.

just wanted to follow up on this thread, i ended up getting $7k from CarMax, which I couldn't really complain about. Similar models on craigslist are selling in the $6k range (though pretty much all have more miles).

You did good. Thats not much less then I actually paid for my 2004. Mine has more miles and non nav, but still a good price from carmax IMO. One of those types of places once gave me $300 for a shitty old nissan.

Thanks for the update. Like others said, 7K is great especially from carmax. You'll probably get a little more by selling private but will be a whole lot of effort.

Now carmax will turn around and sell it for 11K

The prices vary extremely from place to place. Bought my 04 NBP AT TL with 85K miles last year for 8600 Canadian dollars. Summer and winter tires, weathetech mats, etc etc.
