TL Roof Rack question

Hi all,

For those who put roof racks on their TLs for their gear....

I currently own a TSX with a Yakima rack for my bikes and looking to trade it for a 07 or 08 TL.

Question.....for the Thule or Yakima racks....how does it fit on your roof? More important, do the fairing feet (part that contacts the roof) go ON TOP OF or IN FRONT OF the sunroof? Ive seen pics of somebody here with a Yakima rack and the fairing feet are ON the sunroof, itself...rendering it unusable.

IMO, thats a nonstarter.

Thanks!

RF

I have a yakima rack. The wind visor thing does rest on the glass but only because i wanted it to. I didn't know how much movement there is and i didn't want to wreck my paint. I've had the sun roof tilted up with out issue and completely open while cruising in town. Wish i had better pictures.

jisleyjr, thanks for the pics! If you have a chance, I'd love to see a close-up of how the rack mounts to the car. Again, thanks!

okay a bit of a thread revival...but for the curious...

note old school faring with custom fab mounts. faring DOES NOT sit on sunroof like the newer ones do, let alone my paint.

^^a suggestion for the feet of your faring...put a small square of electrical tape under the feet on the car so you have no chance of scratching your roof (clean and wax first prior to application). if you decide to go rackless, the tape just peels off, no harm done to paint. you also wanna make sure the faring is actually sitting flush on the roof (all feet contacting), kind of defeat the purpose of the faring if air is catching the underside of it with potential to lift or vibrate it. question: your front mount looks too far forward?? the square bars need to sit level front and back...the front one seems too far forward. or is it just the angle in the pic? also what mounts are you running???

i think thule may have figured out the sunroof dilemma by using an "extended" bracket of sorts to clear it. i was initially going to have the newer faring installed...then found it sat on the sunroof (not acceptable). my brother had some left over roof rack parts (ala old school faring) and we fabricated the mounting brackets to fit the faring to the car so it didn't sit on the paint.

i would have preferred the round bars of the yakima rack with my thule bike mounts, but back in 05 thule was the only one that had mounts available. yakima was behind the game. oh well.

I've got the Yakima and I was able to place the fairing just before the sunroof. IIRC I had to move the Q-towers about 1/4" farther out on each side to do this.

Do any of you guys have issues with the Sirius satellite with the added roof rack? I am thinking about adding a rack and I wasn't sure if the cross bar near the rear deflects the signal more than usual.

There is a slight issue when i have the rack loaded up with bikes and driving certain directions, i think it cuts in and out enough to annoy me to switch to FM or a CD.

If it is just one bike on there, driver's side, driving West will make it cut in and out. Other directions are fine.

I can't remember if the snowboards cause an issue though.

Unloaded there are zero interference issues.

I have not, but I bought this to carry my kayak. I haven't used it yet, but its good for 100lbs and it has hooks built in to tie down your Yak

Funny that there's a 3G TL in the pictures of that product.

I feel like the inflatable kit would be prone to scratch the roof. Particularly if the car isn't perfectly clean.

I've thought about that too. If I start to notice some scratches showing, I don't think it would be hard to attach some microfiber cloths with velcro.

Finally got a chance to use the rack and a diy kayak roller I found on another forum. I highly recommend both. The roof rack was installed Thursday evening and left on through Friday evening and did not notice any leaked air. I also, drove about 45 minutes to the destination. Maintaining speeds of 50-60mph. I did not notice any hairline scratches but I would be more cautious on darker colored cars as its always possible for anything to scratch your paint.

eek...that's a lot of potential paint marring. it's your car though, so....go with what you want. personally if i had to haul a kayak, i'd go with thule or yakima set ups for the roof for minimal paint damage risk. trunk racks make me cringe too.

i'm just really OCD/anal about my paint.

Links?

i don't know who posed the original picture of the Thule roof rack but it looks awesome and I'm just wondering if you have a link to that particular roof rack. I am referring to the one with all the pictures at the top of the thread
