He better have at least 10k saved for up for future repairs or purchase the vehicle with extended warranty.
which right now the extended service plan for a e60 m5 is The highest I seen of any make/year vehicle with all our warranty companies.
after we made a claim for the transmission and got a new tranny installed they cancelled the warranty.
A year later the motor went. Got one from the junkyard for 8k and motor was also no good.
original motor then got rebuilt by BMW techs and still no good.
Car was finally just sold as is for 10k.
Hope the car he's buying is not a black 06 with 92k

M5 is now in Colorado, I drove it this evening...very powerful...scary, smooth through all 7 gears. I saw the report from the Bimmer dealer and it was all good. Seems as though every time I read on hear about someone buying a car other than an Acura, Honda, or other Japanese brand all hell will break loose. This is a supercar and will have high maintenance costs, just like a Ferrari I would think. But he will baby it, just like he did his TL and does his Pathfinder and 280Z and I think he'll love it.

Either vanos went out or he didn't replace the bearings in time. kaboom! M5's & M6's are such sweet cars, however, out of warranty they're a ticking bomb!

^+1. What really bites is the parts are practically the same as a non-m series but with one little thing changed. 5 series sensor...$150...M5 sensor...$600. Shits crazy.

HAHA . . . that would be a negative.

Sorry for the old thread bump. My AOL is finally back online.

The M5 is a great car, but also a maintenance nightmare if you don't handle issues in time.
Speaking of rod bearings

And if ya think that's crazy, wait until he gets the first bill from the insurance company. M's are also a fortune to insure. And if he's under 25, be prepared for the shock of your life.

Then when he needs things replaced ...............
