New 3G TL owner! Any tips?

Hey everyone!

Have always loved the look of the 3G TL and finally pulled the trigger this past weekend after searching for the ideal one that I had in mind for a few months.

2006, nav, MT, Aspec package

Super happy with it! The first manual car that I've owned and still getting a little used to it, extremely fun thus far.

Purchased it with about 89k miles on it, timing belt/water pump were done at 66k miles. Any other things I should keep my eye out for as time goes by that might be common for 3G TL's?

One thing I've already noticed is that sometimes it will be difficult to shift into 3rd, and it has even popped out a few times. I read somewhere that changing transmission fluid to a GM synchromesh or something along those lines may help? It seemed like there were a lot of differing opinions about that however.

But yea, happy to be a part of this community!

GM fluid is helping the symptom better but if the synchro already worn down then there is no fluid in the world will do magic. Congrat on the purchase and also you are about 10k miles away from 105k services which could become costly. Another common problem is check for the clutch slipping.

Hi and welcome! Grats on your new 3G! Looks nice!

If you haven't already, take the car to your mechanic and have them do a complete inspection (usually costs 1 hr in labour). This will give you a heads-up as to what the car may need down the road, and may reveal weakpoints that are best fixed now.

All good suggestions, thanks for the advice!

For the 105k service, any known things I should keep an eye out for?

Welcome! Normally, the timing belt/water pump is done at 105,000 and that's what is expensive. Seeing as yours was done at 66,000 you won't have to worry about that. I am curious why the last owner had it done at 66 instead of 105 though. That's 39,000 and/or years early.

I wonder if there had been a problem with it. I wouldn't drop a thousand bucks or more on maintenance unless I had to. Great looking car. The A-Spec is the cherry on top.

ooops didn't see it replaced at 66k miles, OP you are good to go then, just replace most of the fluid then you are good to go. Keep an eye out for random misfiring since over rev in these car is not uncommon.

Only had 1 owner previously and they seemed very meticulous with maintenance, had extensive dealership service records and scored a 91 on autocheck. Was in much better condition overall than I had hoped for when I went to check it out initially.

There very well could have been something that occurred around then, but the prior owner didn't seem to mind spending an extra few bucks .

Good to know. That very well could mean the previous owner drank the Dealer's Kool Aid and was convinced that it needed to be replaced early. That's better for you!

That's what I'm hoping! Of course you can never really know... Will probably end up taking it to a local Acura/Honda dealership for an overall inspection within the next week or two.

Planning on making this vehicle last for a while!

If I had to choose between a Honda or Acura dealer, I'd go with Honda. A reputable independent shop will also most likely give it a good once over without the premium the Acura dealer would charge you.

3g is one of the best

Just keep it clean & maintained & it will take care of you! Looks clean already...i liked the 6 spd but i couldnt get along with first gear, i think it was the clutch. Just watch the lip in the front, i wouldnt suggest lowering it like you may be tempted to if your into that. If it had the regular bumper ide say lower about an inch.

Congrats on the new car. Looks great. As mentioned see if the fluids need changing. GM Syncromesh should take care of the 3rd gear pop out. You can also look into the slave cylinder check valve delete for a more positive clutch engagement

The clutch may seem weird at first, but much easiar once you get used to it. As long as you pause in neutral between shifting into the next gear, it'll be pretty solid and problem free.

... find a good local shop to do the things you aren't 'comfortable' doing, find a good spot (online has worked for me) to get parts (cheaper) and only pay them of the labor; of course KEEP HER CLEAN!!!

Congrats!

The clutch does feel kind of odd... Granted I've really only driven 2 other manual cars briefly before, but it feels like way too light and hard to feel the clutch engage.

Gradually getting better with it as time goes by, but still thought it was weird when first driving it.

Something typical with manual TL's?

Seems to be the norm, I dont believe it has anything to do with the fluid, but rather the valve on the slave cylinder. I have not removed mine yet, but Ive read it makes the clutch operate more like a normal feel in any other car. Im going to try it out soon.
