A look inside valve covers after 12 years & 250,000 miles
I bought my 2004 TL 6MT in 2009 with 55,000 miles and just recently adjusted my valves for the first time at 250,000. I been using Mobile 1 5W20 and fram extra guard filters. I generally get around 8,000 miles on oil change. I took a picture in case anyone was curious about how clean these motors are at 250K.
FRONT HEAD
REAR HEAD
Every valve need adjustment. All of the exhausts were tight (a couple had zero play) and all the intakes were loose.
I also had a mouse/rodent eat the wire between my knock sensor connectors. so I ended up taking my front lower intake manifold off to replace the wire and the sensor. Found some left over snacks on top of the motor.
Found three corn cobs by the knock sensor
Corn Kernals next to knock sensor hole.
The new wire came wrapped in anti-rodent tape. Apparently it has cayenne pepper in it, from what the dealer told me.

Wow, that's really clean for 250k miles.
My wife's Pilot has 282k and I should look at that J35's valvetrain as well.

Rats sure do love the knock sensor wire... Sounds like good luck that you were able to fix it while doing the valve adjustment. I had that wire chewed before and it took me about a day to fix it myself. Sensor plastic also broke when I touched it; I guess the heat made it too brittle

I change my oil/filter every 3000 miles. I use conventional 5-20 and whatever oil is on sale. By the looks of the oil at 3000, I could wait to 4500-5000 mile intervals, but it's ~$20 so, it's all good

Found a bunch of nuts on top of my manifold one time, guessing squirrel. But yea mice like to get in there.

I had the same rodent related issue with our 2005 Honda Pilot- that was by far my most complicated repair for any Honda product I have owned. Glad you have had a great owner's experience so far. I'm sure Honda never figured that rodents would eat a crucial wire like the knock sensor but glad they came up with a solution after.

Heh, if the corn cob was in a hotter location, you would have had popcorn streaming out from under your hood.

There are multiple threads on here as well, here is one out of the 3G garage:

Haha, that would have been interesting. If my valve covers had a leak I would have had hot oil too. Just add salt and butter and enjoy the movie.
