Just got a new OEM headlight that I need to blackout

My drivers side headlight got destroyed so I ordered a used replacement. However, I can't seem to remember what paint I used to blackout the chrome. I know it was a flat black, and I thought it was Duplicolor brand. They only make GM/Chrysler Low Gloss paint, and I'm not sure if that will be flat enough.

Does anyone have any experience with the the low glow Duplicolor? I suppose I can buy a few different cans and test them on the broken light, but some of cans aren't cheap.

It might be worth opening both of them up and painting both...

Is it any more difficult to reopen the one that I had previously opened? I put a ton of black hi strength sealant all over, and I'm afraid I might break some of the clips.

only you can answer that yourself because you were the one who put the sealant. do you have the skills to do it? maybe, we don't know you.

I had absolutely no issues taking the originals apart 7 years ago. I just don't know how well the permatex black adhesive sealant comes off.

I'm not worried about the replacement oem one I'm getting. That's why I'd prefer to to match the paint.

Well you won't know unless you give it a try.. bake the sucker and see if it will come apart. Use your discretion at it, but take your time, don't rush it.

Any suggestions for removing the black paint on the passengers side? I tried acetone on the broken one and it went through the chrome into the yellowish plastic.

I don't think there's anything you can do without destroying the chrome. It is pretty sensitive to any chemical or friction.

So, it looks like I'll be painting over the black. I hope I don't need too many coats to match the new black.

Can anybody recommend a good high temp flat black spray?

I think most of the ones at any auto parts store will be good.

if you just want flat black for a tiny chrome strip, then anything will work fine really. you're not going to notice much difference between any of the big brands(krylon, rustoleum, duplicolor, etc)
as for removing the current black, simple sandpaper will do.

Also, be careful how thick you layer on the paint. the clearance to the headlight cover is extremely tight, and will rub if theres even a little extra paint

I think I'm either going with Duplicolor Low Gloss Black or VHT Flat Black. They're both $7.

Now I'm thinking I may just get a can of the Duplicolor low gloss high temp paint and spray the chrome on my broken headlight and see how it matches. I'm nearly certain I used Duplicolor high temp originally so I'm assuming that has to be the same paint I used before.

I really don't feel like opening up my good light, and as long as the blacks match close enough I'll be fine with it.

I got some Duplicolor today and sprayed the chrome parts of the broken light and to my surprise it's nearly a perfect match.

Unbelievably the Fedex man actually made a surprise delivery to my house. Normally, they along with UPS will not stop at my house because of my 110lb once went through a window after a delivery man.

Anyway here it is:

I gotta say it looks really good in person. The polycarbonate is in great shape for being from an 04/05. All the mounting tabs are good. Overall not bad for $220.

Now it's time to get my oven mitts and apron so I can get baking.
