HELP!! Should I just total my 2008 TL Type S?
Hello all.. sad day...a few weeks ago coming back from vacation my NBP 2008 TL Type S was broken into...they also stole my aspec kits, bumpers (douches) and side skirts, in addition they messed up my interior pretty bad and left tons of marks trying to break in.
...Long story short my insurance adjuster told me i could either total it for $18,000 or have him write me a check for $14,000 and keep the car...
Now Here's my dilemma, i don't know if i should use the money to replace the parts and fix up the car , or maybe jump the gun and buy a newer car?
I've had friends recommend me the 2013 Honda Accord Coupe V6 EX-L...it looks pretty sharp all considering!! I could probably sell whats left of my car for a total of $20,000+ towards a newer car.
...i just love my TL though...but at 120,000 miles already i don't know if it's wise to fix it up...
What do you guys think i should do?..
Do you guys recommend any newer cars besides the coupe?
thanks for any input!!

Take the $18k and find yourself a new TL-S, might be what I do. Though with my current commute I may opt for something a bit more fuel friendly.
We got a 4cyl 2013 Honda Accord Coupe and it's a nice ride. In terms of comparing it to my TL, sure it feels like a step below still, but you get alot of car for the money. A V6 would make that care fly and smoke the TL, but the 4cyl has a pretty decent amount of power too imo. The only thing I can't stand about that car is the dual screens and full touchscreen for audio controls (not counting the steering wheel buttons).

i dont think a v6 2013+ accord would "fly and smoke the TL"...I think it would be pretty equal, and at best walk on the TL.
OP, I'm pretty surprised they didnt steal your rims given everything else they took. Any chance of a part out or anything? I'm located pretty close by in riverside and also have a black tl-s so we can swap any parts

I would take the 14k. Personally I love the 9th gen accord and I'm waiting to see what Honda has to offer for the mid-generation refresh. I would use the 14k to fix it up and keep the leftover money to make a down payment on the 2016 accord next year.
Good luck with your situation. Those are some pretty generous offers your insurance gave you too.

Pretty sure the 2013 or noticeably faster than the TL... I remember reading about it somewhere on AZ. I mean, it won't destroy the TL, but it will outrun it by a little bit.
That being said, I wouldn't keep the TL. It now has a "dirty girl" status on the VIN. You'll be taking a hit when trying to sell it. Also, I'd hate to have a car that I know has been ransacked. Just feels like such an invasion of privacy. I would never feel the same about my car afterwards.
I'm surprised they didn't try jacking your wheels...

Take the $18K and start over. There are a couple of very low mileage TL-S cars posted here recently if you want to go that route.

^This.. Wait, I'm torn on this one! No, take the $18k and get something new that won't remind you of how your car looks now and what happened.

I'd take the $18k and try to buy another Type S. Just think down the line trying to sell that TL with an accident and over 120k miles

I would take the money and put it towards a newer car with the latest technology. all 3G TL are all the same whether you have base model or Type-S when it comes to technology . It's very dated when it comes to technology and features because it's pretty much the same since the TL was first introduced 10 years ago in 2004.
Sure 2007-2008 came with backup cameras with Navi, and the navigation display resolution was BARELY improved and the addition of a aux port.
2014 corollas come standard with LED projectors now.
Optimas can be had with panoramic sunroof with heated REAR seats and cooled seats up front.
What I'm trying to say is all of these new cars that aren't even premium brand and price come with better options than a TLS.
Not everyone cares about technology and features in cars but I sure as hell do.

I mean with all due respect, but is that a 3G TL in your avatar or have your purchased something new? Granted, there are plenty of cars that have newer technology etc, but there are certain models that you just LOVE driving regardless of what comes out new. Remember, NEWER doesn't always mean BETTER!! I recently sold my TSX and thought FOR SURE I was going to buy a TLX when I saw the concept photos and everything else when it came out. I'm sure it is a nice car, but it all boiled down to what I felt would make my HAPPY. Always did like the 3G TL and I couldn't be happier in picking one up as my daily driver.

I just drove my 2008 TL and the 2013 Accord we have back-to-back to fill up gas in both cars, and although the Accord has better technology, as it should, the ride is certainly better in the TL to me. The TL is quieter, comfier seats, and feels more premium, again as it should. Sure there's a 5 or 6yr difference between the age of the cars, but the older one is better in terms of quality.
Just my .02. I can definitely understand how you feel though, I'm crazy about tech, just not too crazy about it in my car.

I'd take the $18k and get a 4th gen TL with 6 gears. I had an SH AWD as a loaner, and I loved it. It was so much nicer than my 3rd gen.

If you decide to part out, i would defiantly be interested in your rims.

$18K on a 7 year old car with 120k miles?? No way. If that's still up for grabs I would take that offer!! You can buy the same car for less! Just bought mine for $15,800 with 93k miles.

a lot of ppl here are saying take the 18k and buy a lower mileage one. At 120k miles, the TL still has plenty more to go. I would say take the 14k, use 4k to fix whatever was damaged during the theft, and pocket 10k. the 10k will be more than enough to buy you another engine and transmission if it ever comes down to that.

I think they can be made to look great. After driving an SH-AWD for a few weeks, there was nothing I missed about my 3rd gen (except for the 6MT, but these can be had in a 6MT and the 6AT is very nice too). The 4th gen is at a whole other level.

Thank you ALL for your replies... The points made in this thread thus far are all the mixed feelings and thoughts I've had about this matter this past week... I have decided to keep the car, and accepted the $14k.... At this point I've ordered the bumpers and stuff to "put it back together"... To my surprise the adjuster said that the title should still be free and clear and NOT salvage apparently... After I get it pieced together (by the end of next week maybe) then I'll hopefully be able to make a decision whether or not to keep it.
I love the 3G TL's and especially the type s, body styling and ride is what gets me every time! However, i do have those "Bad Feelings/emotions" about my car ... Almost like it's been violated... I don't know how to describe it... This is the one big reason why I'll probably be selling it/trading it in...
As for what car im trading up for it would definitely have to be something a little nicer... The cameras and tech alone are enough to motivate me to try and find something "outside" of the 3G TL's...
Anybody have any suggestions on a replacement? The Accord v6 EX-L coupe is probably something along the lines of what I would get as a replacement... Looking for that "sporty yet luxurious" car feeling without breaking the bank ... Although the accord really isn't anything I just described, it's kind of some where in the middle... Thoughts on a replacement vehicle would be great!..

If you are probable selling it/trading it, why wouldn't you take the $18K and be done with it?
Are you thinking you are going to get more than $18K on your own? Or are you thinking you can fix up your car for less than $4K?

I don't think you can go wrong with either idea. The question to be answered is, do you want or have the time to put the car back together on your own? If the answer is yes, then there is more money (beyond $18K) to be made if you fix it up and sell it. That money being the labor costs for someone else fixing it plus whatever you save buying the oem parts new from an online retailer (much more cost effective than the dealer). My guess is that (and it's just a guess) is it will be about 3 to 5 grand. The range reflecting whether or not this incident shows up on carfax. If it does, then it will lower resale value and may deter some buyers. However, this is a type-s. It will be easy to sell regardless. If it doesn't show up, you'll likely be at that $5 mark (or higher).
Now if your time is worth more to you or if you don't have the patience to wait for the payoff, just go with the $18K and release the car. As someone who owns both a top of the line 2015 Accord EXL V6-coupe/navi/6 speed manual and a 2008 Acura TL type-s, I have this to say:
- The Accord is faster. Albeit not by much.
- The TL is more luxurious with interior fit/finish/materials. Albeit not by much.
I don't think you can make a bad choice with either one. They are both outstanding vehicles. Hope this helps.
