Wow, totally missed the version 3 of this thread...
shark...doing big things man...very nice!

and JnC, gorgeous work, as always.

Quick question if you don't mind...finally got my hands on a set of type s diffusers and want to make sure I do it right...do you pop the amber pieces out to put the carbon fiber on them? Or just carbon fiber over the whole thing?

Thank you!

Pop them out, install the CF and tuck them back in place . Make sure that there is enough CF that goes behind so that it wont come off over time.

DC, I sent you an email, sorry about the delay.

Hey JnC, just wondering if you received the PM I sent you last week. I'm looking to do a Type-S trade-in - nothing major, just a simple black-out. Thanks.

Introducing Blacked out V3

I thought it was time to throw a bit of extra something on the 3G headlights . Most people wont be able to tell the difference between the V2 and V3 as they are subtle yet they are there to set the two apart.

Available finishes

Matte Black
Satin Black
Super high gloss
Color match

Details

Fully painted main plastic bezel
Partially painted turn signal reflector
Partially painted main chrome bezel (Chrome accent around the projector is left in tact)
Custom cut painted side inserts
Painted fog light bulb cover

^^ Shown set has CCFLs installed as well along with ZKW-R lenses.

Yes you can swap 04-06 with the base 07-08. The only thing I'm concernced with is the 04-06 have a 9006 fog/driving light and the 07-08 have the 9005 DRL light. I'm pretty certain they have the same mounting shape but don't quote me on that.

Same as V1, V2 and V3, $150. Even though it required a whole lot more work/masking etc but it gives the lights a very clean look.

FCVadi, the waterjet cut bracket thing never worked as there hasnt been much interest in it.

I was toying with the idea of swapping out my DRL's and converting them to driving lights with a 55W HID kit. Your lens conversion would help a lot with proper light dispersion. Will the ZKW lens or equivalent fit in the DRL spot? Will the lens assembly hold up to the heat output of the 55W bulbs? Thanks for your help. Oh, 07 TL-S 6mt and I'd be looking to do an exchange since it's my DD.

If you were to put 55W bulbs in your DRL then two things will happen.

1) You will burn the silver bezel around the DRL opening due to heat. DRL bulbs run at 6.2V rather than 12V hence they do not produce a whole lot heat. When people swap Type S headlights to 2004-2006 TLs they just use the DRL opening with the fog light bulb/switch, over time they burn the bezel. This will happen with a 55 watt HID kit as well.

2) You will not illuminate the road in front of you, all you would do is blind the on coming traffic as the DRL reflector is made to just throw light as a blob rather than controlled even disbursement of the light.

If you want more light output from your headlights than my suggestion is to swap the OEM fresnel lenses from your projector with the ZKW-R clear ones and changing the old style Osram bulbs to either the new style Osrams or the Phillips 85122+.

I am sure you know what your headlights produce for light right now, expect the following with the above modifications.

Thanks for the info. I'll consider doing the lens and bulb upgrade for the stock headlight location. Assuming I could care less about DOT regs, would a second ZKW lens fit as a replacement in the DRL location? What I was thinking of doing is going completely without DRL's and using the DRL spot as a driving light location. I'd rig up the DRL location (with ZKW projector lens installed) and tap into the high beam signal wire and run it to a relay harness for the HID kit. I realize I'll need to add some sort of load resistor to the DRL line to avoid the error message. If I'm feeling particularly ambitious I may add a dash switch for the driving lights/former DRL lights so they're only on when needed/wanted instead of always on when the high beams are on. I may spring for one of the Halo DRL setups depending on the cost just to keep the safety benefit of having DRL's. You mentioned the CCFL Halo kit didn't last that long. How long are we talking about? I'd prefer not to obstruct my driving lights withe the LED Halo but don't want to spend the money on the CCFL just to have it konk out after six months.
SUMMARY of QUESTIONS: 1. Can you install a ZKW lens in the current DRL location? 2. Will the ZKW lens withstand the heat of a 55W HID, do you know of anyone who's tried and failed? 3. Ballpark, what is the cost of the CCFL Halo and what is the average service life? 4. What is the ballpark cost/service life for the LED Halo? Thanks for your input.

04-05 Modified lights $300

Details

Price $300 plus shipping

04-05 TL headlights
Blacked out V1
Turn signal reflectors are fully painted with high gloss black paint
Rest of the light is painted with matte black
Retained Amber diffusers
Painted Fog light bulb covers
ZKW-R lens swap

Reason the set is listed for cheap is as it is not in perfect condition. If you were to have everything done listed above the cost would have been $190 to you , $150 in labor and $40 for the lenses.

So cost of actual lights is only $110, I could have parted out the whole light and had made more money on parts i.e projectors and internals.

Here is detailed discription of what condition the lights are in.

Driver side

Small crack in the main black bezel.
Small indentation in the front lens towards the extreme corner, this indentation basically pushed against the black bezel causing the bezel to crack, crack has been mended in the back. All tabs are intact, there is a small 5 mm crack towards the underside of the light which has been plastic welded.

Passenger side

The inside tab is plastic welded along with a crack that it had right next to the tab. Also, the bulb retaining clip is missing from the projector and you'd have to transfer it from your old headlight to the new one.

I can be reached at (Five Zero Eight) Three Six Zero - Eight Three Two Zero if you have any questions.

Im probably gonna be asking the dumbest question ever, when you install the zkw-r/ zkw lenses, do you dial in the cutoff, or is that something that you do when the lights go back on the car? Thanks in advance, waiting on some dough to come in and you are gonna get some business from this guy

^^ In the past I use to just drop in the lenses, which gave a pretty good cut off but over the past year or so I have been disassembling the whole light to make sure everything is clean and the lenses are dialed in correct.

In the past the ZKW-R lenses were actually replicas of OEM TL fresnel lens and not the actual ZKW lenses from the 04 BMW 330XI but over the years they, I think, have switched to clear lens replicas of the actual ZKW lenses, actual ZKW lenses have lower focal point and length hence I have to adjust shields/space lenses to make sure each projector gets the sharpest of cut off.

Also, due to the lights being a few years old the inside part of the projector bowls get a cloudy haze on them, that gets washed off/cleaned before everything is put back together as well .

JnC,great work as always.. been following your thread for a while as I'm waiting for the right time to give you my headlights

How many type of Halo do you have, in the 1st post you have the CCFL and LED but couple posts ago you have AAC Halo?
I'm not a fan LED halo but as you said, CCFL has poor quality. If AAC Halo is a different type, does it have better quality compared to CCFL?

Thanks for the kind words, bud.

There are the LED based Umnitza/USR halos, the umnitza CCFLs and the AACstyle ones. AACstyle has quality product but the fitment sucks as I have to do tons of shaving of the bezel to make these fit and the U shaped halo for fog light opening looks a tad out of place but if the customer wants it installed then they get what they want .

Thanks for the kind words, bud.

The pieces are just OEM diffusers cut at an angle to fit the corner, pseudo type S look .

i was wondering how much for blacked out, flat black, inner chrome reflector partially painted (to keep some reflectiveness), and chrome line painted (kinda gunmetal), and no downtime (with oem headlight swap)? Also with the plastic restored.

With the way I install the ZKW-R lenses 95% of the population wont be able to tell from just looking at the output if the lenses are ZKWs or ZKW-Rs. Each projector/lens set up gets worked on individually. I either space the lens, work the cut off shields or adjust the bowls to attain optimum sharpness and light intensity.

Hey, looking to get a light headlight done as a trade in. Only need the passenger headlight as I got in an accident. Looking for 2004 cleared, color matched (SSM) with a ZKW lense as the previous headlight had one. Is it possible to do one? What's the damage?

JNC, lately my right LED ring lights up half way - if i tap it - it lights up all the way , but it flickers. It could be a weak contact ?

I had them done less than a year ago...

What can you do to fix it ?

Thanks

Hi, can someone PM me the differences between 05 and 06 headlights? I want to hook up my buddy with my headlights, but he has an 06 and I am unsure if my lights are a direct swap. IIRC, read somewhere that the ballast are different. Will wiring be an issue?

Thanks!
