Hey guys, I'm looking at trading my 2007 Type S for a 2006 Audi S4. I'm not very familiar with audi's. I would love to hear anyone's opinions or comparisons if they have had both an Acura and an Audi.

Unless the S4 has super low miles and a good warranty i would stay away.

I would stay away from German car UNLESS they are 3 years old or less.

i almost sold my TL on a whim a few weeks ago to get a B8 s4 (2010)...those cars are so sweet performance wise but overall it was still too much money and i fell back in love with my TL haha.

good luck! but i would stay away from the B7, a lot of improvements (especially look wise) came with the B8

Umm, be prepared for skyrocketing maintenance/repair costs.

Before I bought my TL I was looking at a local B5 S4 for 10k. I was like wow that is a deal...where else can you get 340HP, AWD, V8 and 4 doors?

But after research on audizine, I found that at around 100k miles there is a timing chain service (no chain replacement, but the guides/tensioner may need replacing) which would run you easily 5000+ since the chain is position behind the motor and the motor has to be partially dropped for this service.

So ultiamtely I decided against the S4, even though the entry cost is low (10-15k you can find these cars) but the maintenance will be very expensive.

Owned an A4 before my TL and had tranny (CVT sucks) problems. But I would love an S4! Better have factory warranty tho.

I have a guy at work that lives and dies audi, but he just came in today all sad. He snapped his timing belt and screwed up a number of things under the hood and now has a $4,000 bill. Don't get me wrong, he built the engine and turbos and its by far the fastest car I've ever been in, you shift and your head whips back hard, but to me its not worth 4 grand right now.

My god, I thought people got raped by Honda charging close to $1k since most other grease monkeys charge $600-700.

It's not just the timing belt, when it snapped it caused other damages along with messing up one of his turbo's.

Better apply for a few more platinum cards before you get this car. You have to remove the front end of the car just to change the serpentine belt.

I suppose it depends on whether Audi has interface engines not.

With Hondas and most Toyotas, when the timing belt snaps, you're guaranteed a few bent valves.

Which begs the question why he didn't just change out the belt in the first place?

Love those cars. I have looked at them a couple times in the past, but always get scared off at the timing chain issue. I just don't want to drop $5,000-$8,000 for what will be a when, not if repair on a car that is barely worth twice that. Plus all the rando electrical issues audis are known to have. It'd be a blast while it's running though.

I owned one prior to buying my TL. It was an 02 (last year of the B5). Luckily I purchased it CPO. I sold it right before the warranty expired because just about everything broke on the car (some things even broke twice) and it was constantly in the shop. Straw that broke the camel's back was when my syncros went kaput. Stealer wanted to charge me $6,600 to repair even though they were specifically included under warranty. I finally got them to cover it and traded it in on my new TL back in 06. My dad still buys audi because he loves how they drive. He currently has a 13 S6 and problems are already popping up. Thankfully he is smart enough to trade in right before warranty expires every time!

Yup and that may be a low end of it. In the B6/7 S4s, the timing chain is behind the motor and not only is the parts very expensive (something like 2k) the labor is intense because motor has to be dropped partially to access the timing chain.


Ouch. Looks like I'll be sticking with Japanese/American for now. At least american cars are dirt cheap to fix (for the most part). Unless I win the lotto probably would stay away from any European cars then huh?

The German build great "driving cars" but you have to pay to play. 2012 C63 AMG in the garage and it's very first maintenance service was $more that I care to mention.

My neighbor only buys BMW and currently has a new gen 5 series. He will be the first to tell someone looking at Beemers "Bring money with". His warranty expired recently and BMW called him to offer an extended warranty for $4000. He jumped on it because it was a good deal but he know's what to expect if he didn't get the extended warranty.
