3G TL Manual (Brembo) - Need new brake pads and rotors

Hey all,

I have an 06 TL manual (with Brembos), and I need new pads and rotors soon. I bought the car a year ago and am unsure what the current pads and rotors are, but they're not drilled or slotted. They're quiet, provide decent stopping under hard braking, but produce A LOT of dust, the wheels are caked after a week.

Here's what I'm wanting: pads and rotors that provide excellent braking performance (first and foremost), but ideally aren't too dusty and aren't too noisy. Performance is the most important thing to me, but I don't wanna be bother by the dust or noise too terribly much.

The OE pads/rotors are expensive, I know, so ideally I want something no more expensive, but that performs better.

I've read through a dozen or more threads/forums and come up empty handed, which is why I'm posting.

Thoughts, questions, advice welcome. Thanks!

Stoptech. Most of the threads you read probably mentioned them. A simple search reveals LOTS of info on brakes so I'm confused on why you have no leads. I know because I just did that a few weeks ago

I just bought Stoptech slotted rotors and akebono ceramic pads after doing lots of research. One of my priorities was brake dust. I currently have Stoptech pads on the front and they dust less than OEM but more than I like. The akebonos should be almost no dust per my research and talking to people.

I'll be installing it all in a week along with stainless steel brake lines. Currently on my second set of pads and rotors for front, original pads and rotors for rears. I have 105k miles and will also flush my brake fluid.

I would go with Centric blank rotor and decent pads like RB series or Akebono if you want performace, however if you just use it as DD then Cmax pads will do.

Yeah, I know Stoptech, have since before I started researching what pads/rotors I should get. The problem with researching pads/rotors NOT on a forum is everyone says pretty much the same thing, with no indication of how different pads/rotors compare to eachother, which is why I posed the question.
I'll also be getting SS lines.

I'm curious how Stoptech's slotted rotors will compare to your OEM. As well as the Akebono pads dusting.

My pads seem normal for normal braking, but I have nothing to compare them too. Under hard braking they feel SUPER weak, but that's just my opinion. They're quiet, but very dusty. And I have no idea if any of them are OEM or aftermarket, and if so what they are. Bought the car with 120k on it. Pads/rotors had 30k left in life at that time, I'd estimate.

^ I don't think the stock Brembos are weak at all? But maybe that's just me since everything I've had before is much more weak than the Brembos on the TL

My previous brakes were normal brakes on a 96 Grand Prix and 92 Honda Accord. My brakes should certainly be better than both of those, but they feel MAYBE on par with the Accord, which was better than the GP, but that's been....6 years since the Accord? Ha. Regardless, I'm unsure whether the brakes are OE (brembo) or not. So that's part of what I was saying.

Car and Driver did a head-to-head for brake fade and distance pitting Brembo against stop tech.

Stop tech came 2' within of the Brembo equipped vehicle.

I don't have the link, but a google search should find it.

Sounds like all in all, my current pads/rotors probably aren't Brembo then, being that I'm not impressed with the stopping power? I'll either go OE or Stoptech as a back up then probably. Definitely switching to SS lines.

Wagner MX1049 ThermoQuiet pads, $24.99 at rockauto and CENTRIC 12540062 High Carbon rotors, $48.99 at rockauto. More than adequate stopping power without the dusting nor the high price. This is the combo I've been using for the last 7 years.

What did you end up going with? I have a 06 TL (6spd) and can't decide on what I should do. Dealer wants about $750-900 to install the OEM Brembos (front pads and rotors). I don't know if I should do that or Stoptech Slotted Rotors and pads.

I hate squeaking and don't really care for the dust but I'd rather deal with dust than squeaking.

The Street Performance pads will produce some dust so if you are dead set on no dust, you might want to look into a Centric ceramic pad. Either way, the Stoptech high carbon rotors are excellent and I highly recommend them.

I went with PowerStop kit that has their rotors drilled and slotted, and you have option of ceramic pads, carbon infused ceramic pads, priced 97 or 186 for either option all including and they have been good for taste

RACING BRAKE!

They are performance rotors that are designed to last a LONG time. I've put over 140K on my 3G TL rotors with Acura A-Spec pads and they still are within wear limits with no warping or pulsing! I went though 2 sets of Acura rotors due to warping.

The A-spec pads are not available for the 6MT, I'd suggest Racing Brake ET500 pads (low dust high performance pad) or if you want even HIGHER performance, Carbotech Pads.

The Racing Brake rotors have specifically designed vanes inside to cool the rotor along with drilled slots so the rotor doesn't loose necessary mass to absorb heat, but also it won't crack due to extreme use like regular drilled rotors.

The metallurgy is different too so they last longer unlike most aftermarket rotors which are cheap blanks. Did I mention that the Racing Brake rotors are 2-piece so you have a lighter rotor that leads to a performance increase?

They can be a bit expensive but are worth every dime. There's a set for sale in the black market that's a steal. If I had brembo's I'd buy the 2-piece in a heartbeat. As you can see from my signature, I have Racing Brake on my MDX and will soon have them on the 4G TL and accord once they are due for brakes.
