ACC and LKAS in rush hour traffic are awesome...

I am an enthusiastic driver most days. However, on some days, even I get sick of driving and shifting. Enter two of my favorite RLX features.....ACC and LKAS. I took a video this morning of the two at work in what passes for a busy rush hour in Cleveland. Boring, yes, but this tech at work is great to observe. My only involvement in driving in this video is that I was steering a little.

Nice example how this technology works. Why did the RPMs drop to zero a few times on your video? Hybrid only running?

I just purchased a 15' TLX SH-AWD Advance. The ACC i think needs some work as it doesnt coast much when the vehicle in front of you starts to slow down. Instead it moderately brakes. I havent tried this yet in slower moving traffic however.

I am jealous you have a HUD. One feature i wish my TLX had. Instead it only has a BRAKE hud that flashes "BRAKE" on the windshield for the FCW system.

When the tach is at zero, the Sport Hybrid is in pure electric mode. It's completely silent in the car when no music is playing. Super cool, silent running. Drives pedestrians in parking lots nuts, though.

Bob - It looks to me like your LKAS is engaged but not seeing the lane markings. Is that true or are my aging eyes failing me?

I love both of these system on my '16 MDX. It saved me a few times with the CMBS during rush hour traffic. I agree the ACC is a bit rough, it tugs back with the brakes versus coasting. I wonder if the brake lights turn on when the ACC slows the car down.

LKAS only engages at 45+ mph. If you watch the MID you will see the lane markers hollow when the car is below 45 mph. Once the car reached 45mph the lane markers turn solid in the MID, meaning the LKAS is active.

Even when traveling above 45 mph LKAS may not engage if the car cannot 'see' the lane markers, such as turn off lane sections or where the lane markers are not present. I believe it also disengages in rain.

My bad. I did not watch through the entire video, and of course you are correct on all counts. Sorry, Bob.

This is not as obvious with the Sport Hybrid using ACC as it uses regenerative braking to slow the car , somewhat like coasting. The friction braking is used when greater slowing or stopping is needed.

I drove a new ILX with ACC and LKAS and that system seemed to drive the ILX like bumper bowling, bouncing from side to side within the lane markers. The RLX system stays center and arcs nicely in sweeping turns.

I like the 'suggestion' the LKAS and LDW gives to the steering wheel when I am cruising along, relaxed with a light grip on the wheel. I can feel a slight correction in the wheel or the tugging when I drift out of the lane (usually while intentionally avoiding a pothole). And as the RLX is easy to drive, I also get the 'take steering control' alerts as my grip on the wheel is light.

I really like these systems and adapted to them very quickly.

Maybe I'm a bit picky, but I find the ACC at low speed a bit herky jerky.
The LKAS works well, but I'd just turn it off and use the warning. Feels weird to have the wheel nudged. I'd rather it just take over.

Bob - am I correct that you had the ACC speed set to 73 and had the distance set to only one "block" for the separation distance?

I'd be interested in why that is your setting. I usually use 3 or 4 blocks for the separation distance when on a freeway using the ACC and a high speed. I am nervous being that close behind a car going 70+ mph. I rarely use only one block.

I do appreciate the video and agree 100% with the relaxing pleasure of engaging the ACC and LKAS, particularly on an extended freeway trip.

I run it every time I use my RLX during rush hour, so I have many hours with the system on. It is only occasionally jerky. 95% of the time it is quite smooth, especially after the CMBS software update earlier this year. I don't know how the CMBS update affected ACC, or if it's placebo, but it is much more pleasant to use now, so I do. The LKAS "nudge" is a haptic hint to me that I'm a little close to the line. I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me. The car will never wrest control from you.

The ACC is set for 75 mph and one block. The following distance adjusts by speed; it's closer at low speed and further at high speed, as documented elsewhere on this forum, I think by George Knighton. I find one block more than adequate for urban driving, and the separation at low speed is as you see in the video above. Three blocks and the cars are so far in front of you that people are forever cutting in, and you're getting honked at for driving too slowly. Three blocks I have found better for interurban (long-distance) driving. In urban driving, three blocks is only suitable for right-lane driving IMHO.

I'll have to try another video to demonstrate the difference.

Ugh - 77 North where the road construction never ends!

I find the LKAS (in my TLX) works great under normal conditions - i.e., good weather with well defined lines. On rainy days - not so much.

I'm a fan of using it for the trip home, turn on the LKAS and let my thumb hang on the bottom of the wheel. In fact I think it can maybe be a bit unsafe as I have to check myself from getting too relaxed.

Bob - we should meet up sometime for a coffee next Spring when you have the NSX out. Would love to go for a ride in that beast!

This is exactly why I can get to work feeling much better than I used to, and why I get home at night feeling much better than I used to.

Alice the Dread Beast (Scourge of Furry Things) certainly notices that I'm much more willing to play when I get home.

LOL.... :-)

I drive a long country road that'll vary up and down 35 - 60 mph depending on traffic, and it is a huge, huge relief and benefit.

Yeah, you can kind of sneak up on people.

The Canadian cars are required to have a noisemaker of some kind. I haven't heard it, personally, to know what it sounds like.

I find it quite fun to sneak up on people in the parking lot and then they turn around with the "shit I did not know you were there look". I just waive and move on by. It would be a great car for a private investigator.

I agree. i felt immediately that the CMBS update made the ACC run more smoothly!

I have a video of the ACC working at 3 and 4 bars from last night, since I haven't really tried it before. I'll be uploading it tonight for Malibu Flyer to compare with the video in the OP. Too far for me, but probably more comfortable if passengers are in the car.

Yes. Traded in. I will have another S2000 someday. I just wanted a shot at a NSX (early NA2 is my chosen poison), a "bucket list" car for me, while they were "reasonably" priced.

Another video from a couple days ago. This is so Malibu Flyer and others can compare 3-4 bars with the 1 bar video in my original post. The video starts with ACC set to 4 bars. About 45 seconds in, I change it to 3 bars. And you guys know my secret now, I listen to comedy on XM in my car.

I wonder where we all set the left side of HUD.

I've noticed before that you have yours set to show the information about vectoring.

I have mine set up for ACC/LKAS and just leave it like that. That's what's the most use to me.

I'm with Bob and leave it at the power distribution cartoon because it amuses me when turning and braking. I change it when using ACC/LKAS because it's really easy to change with a push and a flick of the control knob, and then another flick when using the NAV system. I think the HUD's NAV display is actually its best feature.
