I never even compared because I was strictly interested in NAS optimized drives. Sorry.

Depends on what you use them for. The NAS drives like WD Red seem to be prosumer versions of Server hard drives. I had a bunch of WD blacks in a PC case and drives weren't lasting very long, I think because of the vibration from the other drives leading to early failure. The Reds are supposed to be much better in that kindof environment

Yup, vibration is a major killer of HDs. The reds apparently handle vibration better than other drives, no idea of the exact mechanism used. There should be a few white papers floating around if you want to "geek" out.

Edit: Forgot, they are also optimized for RAID, which is another reason I bought them.

Looks like the main feature advertised in the REDs and the Seagate NAS drives is the data protection and the vibration reduction. Both have a 3 year warranty.

The WD ES series and Seagate Constellation Enterprise drives have the 5 year warranties.

My data drive just failed. Seagate Barracuda. I had two of them in a NAS, mirrored. I always hated them because they would spin down all the time and then make a horrendous click when they started back up again. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I put them in my main computer, except that I needed more space.

So, thank god for W8 file history, or at least I hope it has been working. I'll find out tomorrow when I pick up a couple Toshibas from TigerDirect.

Avoid the barracudas. Entry level consumer drive.

They BOTH failed at the same time?

I don't think so. I started getting stop errors and the event viewer said there was an error on the controller, then there were tons of bad blocks read. Then yesterday, I had 3 reboots in a couple hours, so I shut it down for the night.

I picked up two 2TB WD Red drives. They were $20 each more than the Toshibas, but I figured their reputation made it worth the premium. Set it up as a hardware mirror raid, since the drives are twice the size of the old ones.

Currently robocopying my data from the old to the new drive. So far, so good. Hopefully, I get it all before any heatup of the drive introduces issues.

Well shit, I guess it's the RAID controller. One drive dropped out of the mirror set while trying to open my Outlook PST file during my copying. Woo hoo, upgrade time?

It is an old SIL3152 card, so I guess I can get something faster than SATA I.

Yeah, Seagate drives aren't that good. It's as if Seagate got infected by the suck when they bought Maxtor.

Western Digital isn't much better.

These need to drop more in price though... .40/GB is still too much.

Agreed. I got a 27" iMac (normally $1799) for my wife for $1600, going to double the RAM to 16 gigs and this drive will complete it. She'll be happy.

The local "Mac Store" (not Apple!) sent out some coupons for iMacs to some IT-connected people. The only catch is, they're a NW chain and you had to buy it in the store.

At 5900 RPM, might not feed data fast enough... We will have to see.

Wonder how those will do in a home server/NAS application. None of the info says they are engineered for that use case.

from reading a bit, they perform better when reading than writing, and probably have none of the anti-vibration stuff the nas drives do... Hopefully in time, though. I like the price point...

This is my main concern. Unreliable drives suck. Huge unreliable drives suck worse.

I have a feeling they are going to incorporate the shingle approach into their other lines of drives, meaning the low end barracuda as well as the higher end SV and NAS lines, with all their included tech.

Personally, I am very happy with the performance and price/GB of the SV line, although they are updating the labeling and the guts, moving from 7200rpm to 5900rpm in them I just grabbed a bunch more of the 7200rpm to hold me over for a while...

Also, the 2TB SV drives I just received are labelled as "Made in Thailand" whereas the1TBs that I received about 6 months ago are "Made in China". I am interested to see if the 1TBs I receive next week are Thailand and not China...

All ordered from Newegg.

Drives get faster the more TB/platter there is so if this is 2TB/platter (my guess) it should have some good sustained read speed

It's a whole new architecture of the magnetized bits and there is overlap amongst the "tracks" so there is an element of reconciliation/repair always occurring during writing, but reading should be on par with a 5900rpm drive.

OH, werd. I wonder if the overlapping tracks is going to make it even harder to recover data if the controller fails.

Holy sheet... ordered yesterday afternoon from Newegg. Arrived today at lunchtime! So much for 5-7 business days!

All drives indicate "Product of Thailand".

While this is a very small sample size it's interesting none the less. Possible reason why Seagates have such a high rate of failure.....dust!
